Product information "Dwarf Purple-leaf Sand Cherry"

This dwarf purple-leaf sand cherry is a slow-growing, upright ornamental shrub. The name of the dwarf purple-leaf sand cherry is due to its leaves which are dark red and have a metallic shine. Thae fruits that appear in autumn are also red; they are very tasty and are good for snacking, but also for preserving. The flowers are preceded by the fruits, which appear in a large amount in May. They are initially pink and later turn white, forming a nice contrast to the dark leaves. This ornamental shrub grows broad to a height and width of up to 1.7 m with a growth rate of only about 15 cm per year.
This ornamental shrub is very sturdy and tolerant to heat and cold. It can also handle a wide range of soil characteristics, however only a sunny to partially shaded location should be selected.
For Prunus cistena there are two possible pruning option: before flowering in the spring or after flowering in the summer. Both have a disadvantage, since the flowers are formed on two-year-old wood. For the pruning in the spring this means a bloom is lost and for the pruning in the summer, there is a loss of fruit. Nevertheless, pruning is recommended for the purpose of trimming the crown and rejuvenating the shrub so that the shoots inside the crown and those which have become too high can be removed.
The dwarf purple-leaf sand cherry is usually used as a solitary plant due to its picturesque growth, however also a group planting is possible. This shrub is also attracted when planted in a container.
