Product information "Katsura Tree"

The German translation of this tree is interesting: gingerbread tree. I have one of these trees in my garden and I have had to often explain to my visitors in autumn where the wonderful smell comes from. No, unfortunately, we do not have fresh gingerbread ready to eat; it’s just the tree in front of my window...

And indeed one can explain the name: you can imagine a gingerbread bakery. The leaves also give this rare plant its special charm; they are reddish when budding and afterwards take on a refreshing, light green colour. They are also pretty and round to heart-shaped, and the flowers are unimpressive. In autumn, however, the leaves turn to a bright red to orange-yellow sea of colours and one cannot forget the smell!

This ornamental plant is absolutely winter hardy in our latitudes and grows to an impressive size of 3.5-5 m with a picturesque, elliptical, slightly overhanging habit. It can be grown as a tree or as a multi-stemmed shrub.
This plant is an absolute eye-catcher in the garden and should therefore be planted in a single position, also because the gingerbread tree does not tolerate underplantings. A bright location, which is not hot, should be selected. In addition, the soil should be rather acidic to slightly alkaline and loamy or sandy, but in no case condensed. In the case of compacted soils, it is worth it to deeply break down the soil. At least 2 m in diameter and 1 m in depth should be mechanically loosened; the roots want to grow. Water deficiency should be avoided as far as possible.

Pruning is not necessary and would interfere with the natural and beautiful habit of the plant; it is also not well tolerated. Never cut into the old wood to limit the growth, but cut only the one-year shoots. The best thing is to choose a location where the tree can unfold freely and no pruning measures are necessary.
