Product information "Sweetshrub, Carolina Allspice"

Calycanthus floridus is a dense, vigorous deciduous shrub with a rounded habit that grows up to 2 m high. Its lustrous, green foliage turns golden yellow in autumn. During the summer it bears large, brownish red, shiny flowers that smell spicy. Therefore, it is popularly called Carolina allspice. The flowers are long lasting on the shrub and they also make good cut flowers. Also known as common sweetshrub, in reference to the fragrant flowers that combine the scent of pineapple, strawberry and banana, this plant prefers a warm, sheltered location in sun or partial shade. It is native to the milder regions of North America and is easily grown in average, well-drained soil that is rich in humus and not too dry. Prune immediately after flowering in order to shape or maintain compactness. If naturalisation is not desired, remove the root suckers promptly.
