Product information "Yellow-flowering Witch Hazel 'Arnold Promise'"

The yellow-flowering witch hazel 'Arnold Promise is a relatively late flowering witch hazel. At the beginning of March, the fine, yellow flowers appear and prove to be extremely frost hardy.

Frosty hardy flowers

The yellow-flowered witch hazel 'Arnold Promise' blooms at the end of February to the beginning of March, after most other witch hazels. This can thus extend the wonderful bloom of the witch hazels. Although I was able to admire witch hazel flowers every year as a child, I was enchanted every year when I saw the surprising wealth of flowers in the wintertime. Perhaps the name “witch hazel” comes precisely from this enchantment, which is awakened in us as spring approaches. No matter where the name comes from, it is important and true that this plant is an absolute eye-catcher. How the flower buds open and the fine, yellow petals present themselves is always a miracle and a spectacle. And although the delicate flowers seem so fragile, they are not affected by frosts and temperatures down to -10°C. The petals roll up and stay like that throughout the frost period. As soon as the temperatures move into the positive range, the petals unfold again. And here is something else that is exciting about 'Arnold Promise' and most other witch hazels: as soon as the sun awakens the life spirits of plant and man, the blossoms have an intense fragrance!

A beautiful solitary plant

The yellow-flowered 'Arnold Promise' needs a sunny to partially shaded location with permeable, nutrient-rich soil. Compaction or even waterlogging should be avoided. Pruning is absolutely unnecessary with this plant, as witch hazels grow naturally slow and have a beautiful habit; besides, the cuts do not heal well. The only reason for using clippers is given if you want to use the flowers in a vase. The branches that are not yet flowering come to flower in vases and at room temperature after a few days - in nature, they also wait for the first sign of heat to get started.

Due to the unique appearance of the witch hazel during the flowering period, Hamamelis intermedia 'Arnold Promise' should be planted as a solitary plant, at best in a place that can also be seen from the house. Since this witch hazel blooms relatively late, a combination with early flowering witch hazels, for example the variety 'Feuerzauber', is possible. Thus, the flowering period of the witch hazels can be extended and the two different colours bring excitement and more magic in the garden.
