Product information "Orange Witch Hazel 'Jelena'"

Hamamelis intermedia 'Jelena' is one of the earliest witch hazels; sometimes the orange flowers appear in December.

With the variety 'Jelena' there is a new shade of colour amongst the witch hazels. The orange petals have a slight browning and sometimes appear in December, but mostly in January and February.

Imposing flowers in the winter

The orange witch hazel 'Jelena' presents its flowers in the middle of winter, sometimes in December, but mostly in January and February. When there is hardly any colour in the garden and everything is hidden under a layer of snow, this witch hazel brings vividness to the garden. The delicate petals are thread-like and have an orange-brown colour. Although the individual petals are very filigree, they seem imposing in the mass in which they appear (or is it more due to the yearning for flowers?). Awhile after flowering, the leaves appear. They are deciduous and resemble hazelnut leaves. In the summer, the orange witch hazel 'Jelena' looks inconspicuous and one almost forgets the spectacular flowers that bloomed in the winter. But in autumn, the plant again shows its best side; the leaves change colour in all shades of yellow, orange and red.

Growth and size

Hamamelis intermedia 'Jelena' grows up to 2.5 m high and 1.5 m wide. The growth is funnel-shaped and slightly branched.

Requirements for the location

This witch hazel thrives best in loose soil. Compaction and waterlogging in the soil is not tolerated. In addition, the location should be sunny or partially shaded. The witch hazel 'Jelena' is extremely hardy; frosts down to -20°C cannot harm the plant. Even during the flowering season, Hamamelis intermedia 'Jelena' turns out to be very frost-resistant. Temperatures of -10°C are easily tolerated; in warmer weather, the petals recover quickly and exude a pleasant fragrance. Since witch hazels are shallow rooting plants, you should not do any mechanical tillage in the root area, as this would damage the fine roots.

Do not prune...

Pruning should be omitted. Witch hazel grows slowly by nature and pruning would affect the beautiful habit. Also, large cut heal poorly. It is best to let nature run its course with Hamamelis intermedia 'Jelena'.

For a prominent location in the garden

Due to the overwhelming winter flowers, this witch hazel is ideal as a specimen plant. It should be placed in the garden so that it can be seen from the house. The combination of different witch hazels is highly recommended. You can play with different colours and flowering times; the variety 'Jelena' is one of the earliest varieties. It is also suitable as a container plant.
