Product information "Orange Witch Hazel 'Orange Beauty'"

The orange-flowering witch hazel 'Orange Beauty' creates a bright orange, sometimes almost dark yellow colour spectacle during the middle of winter.

As early as mid-January, the bright orange blossoms of the witch hazel 'Orange Beauty' appear. They stand together in dense clumps, and thanks to their colour, the filigree blossoms can also be seen at a distance.
Bright flowers in dreary winter weather

The filigree blossoms of the witch hazel 'Orange Beauty' already appear in mid-January and the bloom lasts until mid-February. Despite the fine appearance of the individual petals, the flowers have a strong effect. On the one hand, this is due to the time of flowering: in the middle of January, witch hazel does not steal the show; on the other hand, the strong effect also comes from the fact that the flowers are arranged in dense clusters. Even occasional frosts cannot affect the flowering. As soon as the frost has set, the flowers recover magnificently and radiate again. If the weather is warmer, the witch hazels will spread a light spring fragrance, even in the winter.
A feast for the eyes, also in autumn

After flowering, the leaves start to develop and they have a slight bronzy glow. The growth is slightly funnel-shaped and less branched, up to 3.5 m high and 3 m wide. Otherwise, summer is not the season in which Hamamelis intermedia 'Orange Beauty' can make its mark. It seems a bit inconspicuous, a bit like a hazelnut. But then in autumn, the witch hazel 'Orange Beauty' again shows its best side. An orange autumn colour appears and transforms the plant again into a garden star.

The soil should be loose and nutritious, preferably in a sunny or partially shaded spot. As a shallow rooting plant, witch hazel does not appreciate mechanical soil cultivation in the root zone.
Why not to prune Hamamelis

We, like most gardening experts, recommend not to prune Hamamelis. Here are the following reasons:

1. Witch hazel grows naturally slow and less branched

2. The natural growth is the most beautiful

3. Large wounds heal poorly

4. There are hardly any new shoots that form from the old wood; pruning does not lead to more branching
Hardiness and pot cultivation

The orange-blooming witch hazel 'Orange Beauty' is absolutely hardy down to -20°C. As a winter bloomer it must be able to withstand cool temperatures. Due to the high and unique attractiveness in the winter, Hamamelis should be placed in the garden so that it can be seen well from the house. Growing in pots is also possible. A sufficient supply of water must be provided during the winter and the root area should not completely freeze, so that the plant, especially during flowering, can be supplied with enough water.
