Product information "Witch Hazel 'Diane'"
Hamamelis intermedia 'Diane' has the intense red flowers that appear in February, thus announcing that spring is soon to come. The fine, filamentous petals have an intense, red colour.A valuable winter bloomer
When the flower buds open and the inconspicuous shrub adorns itself with numerous, filigree, thread-like petals, one can explain the origin of the name witch hazel. It seems like magic, especially considering the flowering time during the middle of winter. The flowers appear in February, even before the leaves and even before something else in the plant world. The fine flowers have an intense, bright red colour and they conjure up a splash of colour in the garden. Even frosts cannot affect the plant; with temperatures down to -10°C, the petals recover again in warm weather. During frost periods, they roll up for a short time; after the danger of frost they roll out again and thus show more colour.
Beautiful autumn colouration
Green leaves adorn the plant in the summer and during this season Hamamelis intermedia 'Diane' takes a rest and lets other garden plants have an eye-catching role. But not for long, because in autumn, the leaves turn shades of warm yellows to red and are again the centre of attention.
Growth
The growth is broad and slightly funnel-shaped, up to 2.5 m high and 1.5 m wide. Witch hazels grow slowly and beautifully branched.
Also suitable for balconies and terraces
Hamamelis intermedia 'Diane' develops best in a sunny to partially shaded spot in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Compacted or even wetted soils are not ideal for this plant! Even pruning is not tolerable for this red-flowered witch hazel, as it interferes too much with the natural, picturesque habit. Also, large wounds heal poorly and only small, new shoots grow from the old wood.
As a valuable and impressive winter bloomer, Hamamelis intermedia 'Diane' should have a proper place in the garden. An individual position is best or in small groups. 'Diane' can also be used in on the balconies and terraces.
