Product information "Pachysandra terminalis - Japanese spurge"
Pachysandra terminalis, also known as Japanese spurge, is a boxwood plant and native to the deciduous forests of eastern Asia and North America. It is considered to be one of the best ground cover plants for shady and partially shaded locations. With a maximum height of 30 cm, the small shrub grows upright or creeping. The roots are fleshy and form many new shoots. As a low growing semi-shrub, Pachysandra grows relatively slowly and forms evergreen, dense mats. The medium to dark green, glossy, egg-shaped leaves are about 6 to 10 cm long, heaped on the shoots and leathery. The flowers appear as white, upright spikes in April and May.
In parks and gardens Pachysandra terminalis has become a popular ground cover. In the shade or partial shade of large trees, they not only serve as a ground cover, but they are also perfectly suited as a “leaf eater”.
On almost all soils Pachysandra terminalis forms dense, extensive coverage (plants per square meter: 8-12 pieces). It thrives especially in loose, humus-rich, moist to moderately dry soils. The plant prefers shaded or semi-shaded areas and spread quickly via underground runners. It is particularly well suited for underplantings because it endures the root pressure of larger trees. Japanese spurge is frost hardy; late frost damage only occurs occasionally in young plants. It is absolutely tolerant to pruning, however such measures are rarely needed.
