Product information "Small-growing Hydrangea 'Koreana'"

Hydrangea serrata 'Koreana' forms pink to blue flowers from July to August depending on the location. This small beauty grows only 75 cm high.

The flowers of the small-growing hydrangea 'Koreana' are pink to blue, depending on the pH value of the location. They appear in July and August and smell pleasant during this time. Growing to a height of only 75 cm, this hydrangea is also an ideal plant for containers.

A dwarf with a great effect

The small-growing hydrangea 'Koreana' convinces with its pretty flowers, which appear from July to August. They are pink to bluish; the flower colour is pH dependent, as is also the case with other hydrangeas. During the flowering period, whether the flower is blue or pink, the flowers are visited by insects, bees and butterflies. People also enjoy the wonderful fragrance. The foliage is green in the summer; in autumn, a bright red colour develops. The flowers stay on the plant as winter decoration until the spring.

Compact growth

The small-growing attribute gives a hint that the hydrangea 'Koreana' remains compact. This small dwarf only grows between 50 and 75 cm high; the width can be between 50 cm and 1 m. Hydrangea serrata 'Koreana' grows very dense and forms many flowers, consisting of large, sterile marginal flowers and small, internal flowers.

A different colour depending on the location

As already mentioned, the flower colour is dependent on the pH value and this should be neutral to acid. The more acidic the soil, the bluer the flowers. If this hydrangea is planted in a bed, the flower colour can only be adjusted to a small extent and you have to be satisfied with the pH value that you have in your garden. Of course, you can make a bog bed or add bog bed soil to the planting hole, but in the latter method it will mix with the surrounding soil in the course of time and become more neutral, in which also the flower colour changes. Acidic fertilisers often have little effect, as the fertiliser rapidly evaporates into the soil. And then the flowers will again be rather pink-coloured...

Growing in a pot

The small-growing hydrangea 'Koreana' is an ideal container plant because of its low growth height of only 75 cm. It can easily be grown in a pot on a balcony or terrace. In the pot, the pH can then be determined quite accurately by adding acidic soil or by an acid fertiliser.

The ideal location

The location should be sunny or partially shaded. Apart from that, Hydrangea serrata 'Koreana' is extremely undemanding, resistant and hardy.

Easy care and versatile possibilities for use

In the spring, the old inflorescences should be removed. In addition, you can thin the plant and remove individual, old shoots. Keep in mind that this hydrangea’s buds for the next year already grow this year, so if it is cut too much the plants will flower weakly the next year.

The small-growing hydrangea 'Koreana' is particularly beautiful when planted in small groups; area plantings can also be arranged. It can also be used as a flowering border of beds or as a bedding plant itself. As a potted plant on a terrace or balcony, it spreads a wonderful flair.
