This evergreen spindle first develops ascending, later dense, mat-shaped, low-growing branches, in which an absolutely closed carpet forms. Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' can creep along the ground and reach a height of about 30 cm. If climbing aids, such as trees, walls or stones are available the spindle can climb up them and reach up to 2 m high.
The evergreen, opposite, elliptic to ovate leaves of 'Emerald Gaiety' can be up to 4 cm long and 3 cm wide. The characteristic feature of this variety is the distinct colouration of the leaves. They have a width of approximately 1 to 2 mm wide, a white edge, however this appear to be marbled gray green up until the middle of the green leaf. Basically, the leaves of the variety 'Emerald Gaiety' are highly variable and changeable, both in size, shape and colour. In autumn, the leaves turn a strong, brownish red colour; the white edge blends to pink.
On walls, stones or the like Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety' bring as much colour into play as on graves. The attractive ground cover is also well suited for beds as well as on balconies or terraces.
The spindle thrives in both the shade and in full sun; it tolerates all locations and is completely unpretentious and easy to care for. The bush can be pruned and can be trained as a small hedge or border for a bed.
