The characteristic features of the flat growing, evergreen Euonymus fortunei 'Harlequin' include the decorative, white, glowing shoot tips, which appear with the new growth. The more or less ground covering shrub only grows about 30 cm high. However, its long shoots may occasionally entwine before they crawl along the ground.
In addition to the white new growth, the variety 'Harlequin' has impressive green leaves with white speckles. In the cold winter, the foliage turns to shades that are reminiscent of brownish red embers, which thus create a genuine play of colours.
Due to the unusual colour scheme, talent is required when arranging the plants. But used correctly, Euonymus fortunei'Harlequin' is suitable both for covering walls and fences, for grave design and also as a colourful ground cover. As an extravagant plant for bowls, it provides colour on balconies and terraces. Due to its good tolerance to cutting, it can be pruned or trained as a hedge or bed enclosure.
The undemanding euonymus is absolutely easy and robust. It has few requirements in its locations and likes both partial shade as well as sun. Euonymus fortunei 'Harlequin' however prefers protected, warm locations. Beyond the viticulture climate this dwarf shrub is not sufficiently hardy.
The plant freezes back especially in cold winters and the shoots sprout again in the spring.
