Product information "Japanese Azalea 'Kermesina'"

Flowers: Slight marking, purple-violet
Final height: Approx. 80 cm
End width: Approx. 100 cm
Flowering period: Mid-May to early June

The flowers of the Japanese azalea 'Kermesina' have a great luminosity. They are strongly pink to pinkish red coloured and open starting at the end of May. A single flower has a diameter of 2.5 to 3.5 cm. 'Kermesina' blooms so rich that the entire plant is covered with flowers and almost no leaves can be seen.

Also beautiful in the winter

The fresh green foliage is small and ovate. It remains green even in the winter months, making Japanese azaleas a valuable ornamental plant for gardens throughout the entire year. 'Kermesina' grows densely branched and slow. After many years it reaches a height of 50 to 60 cm. Like all Japanese azaleas it grows more wide than tall and can reach a diameter of up to 1 m.

Do not like lime

For 'Kermesina' to thrive well, the right soil conditions are decisive. Almost all rhododendrons need acidic soil with a pH of 4.5 to 5.5. Garden soils should be treated with peat or rhododendron soil in order to achieve this pH value.

For gardens and pots

With its bright flower colour and compact growth Rhododendron obtusum 'Kermesina' is versatile. It grows equally well in the sun and partial shade and can be combined well with lavender heather, tall rhododendrons and perennials such as hostas or Heuchera. With its excellent winter hardiness, it is also a durable container plant; however it is necessary to use acidic substrate (rhododendron soil)!
