The characteristics of the common honeysuckle or fly honeysuckle are anything but ordinary. This shrub is absolutely unpretentious; it is tolerant to heat, salt and drought. It thrives in both sun and shade and is an important source of food for bees, butterflies, birds and other animals. For humans, however, the fruits are not suitable for consumption. This ornamental shrub has a well-branched and grows up to 2 m high and equally wide. The yellowish, fragrant flowers appear in May and June.Lonicera xylosteum is very easy to maintain. Planted in a calcareous site, it tolerates sun, shade, heat, prolonged drought, salt, but is grateful for a mulch layer in order to prevent strong drying. Pruning is usually done in the autumn, and the older shoots can be removed. During the vegetation period, the removal of older shoots is well tolerated. This should be done in August or September, since the fruits are already harvested.
