Product information "Hardy eucalyptus 'Silverana'"

Eucalyptus gunnii 'Silverana' is hardy and therefore also suitable for European gardens. Eucalyptus? Is it possible to grow this plant in Central and Northern Europe? Yes, it is! The eucalyptus 'Silverana' is one of the first hardy eucalyptus to survive the Central European winter. With a winter hardiness down to -10°C you can plant this eucalyptus in protected sites without any problems. The silvery leaves shine throughout the year and give the plant an elegant appearance. Even in a harsh winter, the leaves stay on the plant and shine in the winter sun. If the leaves are rubbed between the fingers, the typical menthol-like eucalyptus scent is created. The small flowers appear in June and July and they are rather inconspicuous. With a height of 4 m, the plant develops into an imposing ornamental shrub; when pruned, an impressive and dense hedge forms.

An exotic plant for the garden

As I already mentioned, Eucalyptus gunnii 'Silverana' is hardy down to -10°C, but a protected location should be chosen. In the first 3-5 years, a winter protection can be applied to protect the plant from the winter cold. Wrap the plant with a winter protection fleece and cover the root ball with a 20 cm thick layer of straw. The old wood is then hardy and does not need any protection anymore. Of course with older specimens, the filigree shoot tips can also freeze back, but they can easily be removed in the spring.
Of course, the hardy eucalyptus 'Silverana' needs a sunny location in the summer. It is resistant to drought and the roots penetrate deep into the soil.

Overwinter potted plants like citrus plants

If you are not quite sure whether the eucalyptus 'Silverana' will survive in your garden, then planting it in a pot is also possible without any problems. Due to its good tolerance to pruning, the eucalyptus can also be kept at a size that is ideal for terraces. The overwintering conditions for potted plants are somewhat different than for plants planted out in gardens. The winter hardiness of Eucalyptus gunnii 'Silverana' is also due to the fact that the roots penetrate deep into the soil, so deep that the soil never freezes through. In the pot, however, the root ball freezes quickly. Thus frost-free overwintering is necessary and ideal at 5-10°C. Due to the evergreen leaves, a bright location is also desired. Watering should also take place about once a week during the winter, when the substrate has completely dried out. Basically, the overwintering conditions of eucalyptus are similar to those of citrus plants; bright, not too warm and do not completely forget to water the plant.
