The common box is an evergreen ornamental shrub or tree with a dense, round habit and a blue-green colour in the winter. It prefers a sunny to partially shady location and will even tolerate full shade, however the blue-green winter colouration is not so distinct. It thrives in any ordinary garden soil. It loves moisture, however no waterlogging.
Due to its tolerance to pruning, Buxus sempervirens is used very much as a flower bed enclosure, a hedge plant, as topiaries or as a container plant. The leaves are oval and have a green to yellow-green colour. The flowers are inconspicuous, greenish-yellow and do not have petals.
