Product information "Christmas Berry 'Little Red Robin'"

The evergreen Christmas berry 'Little Red Robin' is a small shrub that grows about 120 cm high. In May to June, white, loose flowers appear which turn into small, red fruits that decorate the ornamental shrub in autumn. In spite of this, however, the shining leaves have the highest ornamental value; they are bright red when they sprout and later they have a dark green colour.
This dwarf Christmas berry requires a sunny or semi-shaded location with humus, permeable soil.
'Little Red Robin' can be used as a solitary plant, in a group, as a low hedge, for area plantings or containers. In a hedge, it is recommended to plant 1-2 specimens per running metre.
Photinia fraseri 'Little Red Robin' is very tolerant to pruning but does not have to be cut. When planted as a hedge, pruning can be carried out after flowering, but not all inflorescences should be removed, since otherwise no fruits can be produced for winter decoration. If pruned in the spring, it is possible to remove any frozen back shoot tips and the shoot formation will be promoted. Hedges can also be trimmed with the hedge trimmer. It is best to do this in the spring, after flowering due to the frozen back shoot tips.
As with many evergreen plants, the low temperatures in the winter are not a problem for this Christmas berry, but rather the evaporation from the leaves that is stimulated by the winter sun; but since the soil is usually still frozen, no water can be take in. This causes typical drought damage in the winter. In order to prevent this, sun exposure to the ornamental shrub should be prevented; this can be done by using fleece or brushwood. Under no circumstances should plastic be used, since it creates a greenhouse climate where even more water is evaporated.
