Product information "Dwarf Japanese Barberry 'Kobold'"
The dwarf Japanese barberry 'Kobold' blooms reddish in April and May and forms red fruits. It grows only 50 cm high and does not need to be pruned. The green leaves are in a nice contrast to the reddish flowers and the red fruits. After the orange autumn colouration the fruits are an eye-catcher into the winter.Dwarf Japanese barberry for the smallest areas
As the name suggests, this plant is a small form of the common barberry. 'Kobold' is only about 50 cm high and wide and it is suitable for even the smallest gardens or terraces.
The leaves of this dwarf Japanese barberry are fresh green and only 3 cm large. Red flowers appear in April to May and they attract a myriad of insects. Bright red fruits develop from the flowers in autumn; they are edible, but very sour. Therefore, their sight is more enjoyable than their taste; they often remain on the plant until the winter and form a beautiful winter decoration. Also in autumn, the red to orange autumn colour develops its signal effect.
Small, but effective
As tender and fine as Berberis thunbergii 'Kobold' may appear, with a myriad of thorns the plant is very defensive. The smart gardener cleverly knows how to use this; a garden or bed bordered by a Berberis hedge, and no matter how small, works wonders against unwanted visits by dogs, cats or even people. Due to the dense and small growth, the green Japanese barberry 'Kobold' is ideal for the enclosure of beds, for grave plantings or for area plantings. Even on terraces, this plant keeps out unwanted visits from animals.
Pruning is not necessary
Like all barberries, Berberis thunbergii 'Kobold' is extremely undemanding; it tolerates sunny and shady locations with any normal garden soil. It is lime-tolerant, but actually prefers slightly acidic soils. Due to its tolerance to heat, it can also be used in the city centre. Thanks to the not so vigorous growth, 'Kobold' does not usually require pruning; it is very straightforward in the area. Slight or stronger cuts are easily tolerated. Radical cuts should be made when there is no foliage on the plant, so that the plant is encouraged to grow vigorously. A weaker cut or shaped cut can also be carried out in the summer.
