Product information "Green Box-leaved Barberry 'Nana'"

The green box-leaved barberry 'Nana' is the ideal boxwood substitute with its round and compact growth and evergreen foliage. It forms dark green, evergreen leaves. The yellow flowers that appear from April to May form a nice contrast to the leaves and are popular with insects. The good tolerance to pruning and the unpretentious nature also contribute to the use of 'Nana' as a substitute for the disease-prone boxwood tree.

Evergreen and an ideal replacement for boxwood

The appearance of the green box-leaved barberry 'Nana' resembles boxwood; its evergreen leaves are small, oval and dark green and stand tightly on the branches. Thus, the compactly grown branches appear very dense, similar to that of boxwood. As a plus point the golden yellow flowers should be mentioned, as they stand lushly together and are very beautiful in the interplay with the dark green leaves. The fruits are small and red, but rarely fully develop. The broad-bodied growth of Berberis buxifolia 'Nana' also suggests that the plants will grow up to 75 cm high and a few centimeters more in width. And, of course, barberries are not eaten by the dreaded box tree moth.

An ideal hedge plant

The box-leaved barberry 'Nana' is often used where a boxwood hedge was once used, which has fallen victim to the box tree moth. Like the boxwood, this barberry is very undemanding; every normal garden soil is tolerated, both in the sun and in the shade. Berberis hedges offer another advantage compared to boxwood hedges: no animal (except small birds) dares to pass through the hedge due to the thorned shoots. Berberis buxifolia 'Nana' is therefore usually used as a hedge around beds or lawns where no visitor is desired. Along such a path, a hedge works wonders by not allowing wild paths and shortcuts through open spaces to be made.

Pruning can also be carried out as with the boxwood; the natural, globular growth can be shaped with a hedge trimmer. This can be done in the summer with advantage on a cloudy day, since the lower leaves, which have been protected from the sun's rays, must first get used to the sun.

Many possible uses

Using the green box-leaved barberry 'Nana' as only a hedge plant would not do this plant justice. It can also be used wonderfully as an ornamental plant in the garden, in beds or in rockeries, in small groups, in an area planting or in pots on the terrace. Winter protection is advised when this barberry is planted in a pot. This evergreen plant should also be watered enough in the winter, which is best on frost-free days.

Planted outdoors, this barberry is extremely resistant and hardy; it can also be used along roads or in the hot city centre.
