Buddleia alternifolia is a vigorous, large, deciduous shrub which can be trained into a small tree. It has an overhanging habit and masses of fragrant flowers appear in mid-summer. The long, thin branches often extend to the ground. The narrow, grey-green leaves and sweetly scented lilac-purple flowers are borne in clusters along the previous year's shoots. Because the flower buds form on old wood, butterfly bushes should only be thinned and not cut back.
The butterfly bush is a magnet for bees, bumble bees, butterflies and hoverflies. The growth is broad and older plants can grow up to 2.5 m high. The location should be in full sun and protected. In rough locations, young plants are grateful for some shelter at the base. The soil should be well-drained and fertile.
