What are "Fourberries®?
Botanically these berries are Ribes aureum, gold currants, which are sometimes also called Ribes odoratum. Originally, this species is a prairie plant that was found in many (mainly western) countries of North America; it is robust, hardy and drought resistant.

How and where were the Fourberries® bred?
We at Lubera have selected the Fourberry varieties from several thousand seedlings. We have selected the best varieties in terms of the flowers, fragrance, fruits and autumn colour. And our breeding work continues!
When are Fourberries® ripe?
Much later, as it first may seem. Especially with the late-ripening and large-fruited Fourberries, one is usually tempted to pick the fruit as soon as they just start to turn black. They should only be picked once the first neighbouring fruits begin to burst from maturity and when the berries almost fall into your hand. Then they are ripe, sweet, and have a resinous, interesting flavour (without the taste of cassis). The harvest of a bush/variety may then take two to three weeks; there is always enough to harvest for your daily cereal!

How can Fourberries® be used?
Fresh as a snack, the late-ripening black varieties have fruits that are almost the size of marbles. Eat them daily in cereal. They can also be frozen or processed into jam and juice.
Fourberries® as raisins
The bursting fruit that you always see on crowded bushes are not wasted. Let them hang... and in reasonably normal years with not too much precipitation they will dry in 2 - 3 weeks to sweet and tasty raisins. This was probably how the indians used Fourberries...

How are Fourberries® grown and pruned?
Fourberries are best grown as bushes. In the first year, the shrubs bloom heavily and usually even bear the first fruits. The highest fruit yield is on the 2- and 3-year-old shoots. To rejuvenate the plant, it pays to remove shoots annually that are older than 4 years.
