Product information "Grafted Cornelian Cherry 'Coral Blaze'"

The Cornelian cherry 'Coral Blaze' develops best after planting in the garden. Basically, all Cornelian cherries take a short break after transplanting; the joy of growth may not be fully restored until after 2-3 years, but 'Coral Blaze' starts more quickly, and thus usually has a first yield in the second year, very rarely in the third year. The fruits of 'Coral Blaze' are about twice as big as those of the wild shrubs, oblong, up to about 5 g in weight; they are especially conspicuous for their coral colour, which does not darken as much as other varieties (e.g. the dark red 'Elegant') even when fully ripe. The taste of 'Coral Blaze' is perceived as much better than that of the wild Cornus mas, on the one hand because the fruits are fleshier and have more juice to offer, but also because the greenish secondary tone is largely absent. All in all, 'Coral Blaze' has a slightly acidic effect, behind it, the sugar is well noticeable, but basically, the variety will appeal mainly to lovers of sour varieties when eaten fresh.
The advantages of the Cornelian cherry 'Coral Blaze'
  • Bushy, well-branched growth
  • Fast start after planting
  • Large, coral red, oblong fruits with a refreshingly sour taste
Use in the garden

Due to its branched and cheerful growth, the Cornelian cherry variety 'Coral Blaze' would be most suitable for a solitary planting, and would therefore look quite good exposed in the garden alone. But even this variety needs a second pollinator within 10 m. So if you want to see 'Coral Blaze' in a solitary position, you would have to plant another variety, e.g. the other red variety 'Elegant', in the same garden, in a hedge, for example.

As just mentioned, 'Coral Blaze' needs in any case another pollinator within a radius of 10 m, either the other red Cornelian cherry 'Elegant', the yellow sister variety 'Yellow Molalla' or a wild shrub of Cornus mas.
