Product information "Grafted Cornelian Cherry 'Elegant'"

The fruit of the Cornelian cherry 'Elegant' is particularly exquisite: large and elongated, weighing around 5 g, and with an elegant, curved pear shape. In contrast to Coral Blaze, the Cornelian cherry variety 'Elegant' darkens considerably when ripe; it becomes dark red and can then be harvested very easily, almost falling into your hands. Of course, you can also do without the laborious hand harvesting of the Cornelian cherry 'Elegant': simply place a cloth or sheet under the tree or bush when it ripens and collect the naturally fallen fruit every morning and evening. Of course, shaking the tree very lightly increases the harvest per day; but as soon as one shakes only a little too much, the danger increases that also unripe and barely ripe fruits mix with the fallen harvest. Afterwards the “fallen” fruits can be kept in the refrigerator for 2-3 days until they are either eaten fresh or processed or frozen.

The advantages of the Cornelian cherry 'Elegant

  •    Very large, dark red, mostly pear-shaped, elongated fruits
  •     Large, rich yields
  •     Fruity, fresh and pleasant flavour, besides Yellow Molalla the best variety for eating fresh

Pollination

Like the other Cornelian cherries, 'Elegant' needs a pollinator, another cornelian cherry variety within a radius of 10 m. By the way, when planting a hedge or row with one variety, one pollinator for every 10 varieties to be fertilised is sufficient. Of course, a wild bush of Cornus Mas (a non-grafted seedling) can also perform this pollination task. The pollinators for 'Elegant' are thus 'Yellow Molalla', 'Coral Blaze' or the wild Cornelian cherry in our range.

How must the Cornelian cherry 'Elegant' be pruned?

Actually not at all. After planting, it is typical for 'Elegant' and most other Cornelian cherries that they have a little difficulty growing for one to three years. During this time it also makes sense to support the start of the Cornelian cherry with some additional fruit and berry fertiliser. Up to the 8th to 10th year and up to a height of 2-3 m Cornelian cherries should not be pruned at all; after that it can make sense to cut out a couple of  branches that are too high and too strong completely in order to maintain the height and promote a renewal of the shrub from below. Of course, using the Cornelian cherry bush in a pruned hedge is an exception: it is pruned every year in autumn or January, from the moment when the hedge plants grow out of the intended hedge shape (e.g. 200 cm high, 80 cm wide).
