Product information "Japanese Cornelian Cherry"

This Japanese cornelian cherry flowers from March to April when other ornamental shrubs are still in winter hibernation. Before the leaves appear, this plant attracts the first hard-working bees with its flowers. The flowers stand in large, light yellow umbels. From them, bright fruits develop, which are used in traditional East Asian medicine. From the middle of August, the fruits are edible but relatively tart in flavour, which is why they are usually processed. But one should hurry: the fruits are not only a welcome change for humans, but also in the animal kingdom there are some lovers of the tart-sour fruits.
After a beautiful flowering with a pleasant fragrance in the spring and bright red fruits in late summer, the Japanese cornelian cherry is not yet ready to stop enchanting human beings and animals. In autumn, it also has a wonderful autumn colouring in warm, reddish brown tones. The silvery brown stem gives the ornamental shrub an exotic appearance, especially as the bark peels from time to time in strips off the stem and gives it a scaly appearance.
Cornus officinalis needs a sunny to partially shaded location with semipermeable, humus-rich soil.
This winter hardy Japanese cornelian cherry grows to a multi-stemmed shrub or a small tree of up to 5 m in height; it grows upright and well-branched. This shrub can be used like the native cornelian cherry tree as a solitary tree, in a wild hedge or in small groups. This plant blooms and bears fruit on the old wood; with cutting measures, the flower buds are also removed. Pruning is not necessary for solitary plants, but can be carried out in the spring, if necessary, during which the plant can be thinned out. If the plant is to be kept small, or for hedge plants, the main shoots can easily be shortened to 1/3 of their size.
