Product information "Hydrangea 'Zorro'®"

The special something in your garden could be the hydrangea 'Zorro'! It is not only the flowers that have lots to offer, the pink or blue blooms also sit on dark brown, almost black flower stalks.
Not just beautiful flowers

For once, the flowers are not the most prominent feature of a hydrangea. They appear from June to September and consist of very large, marginal flowers and smaller, inner flowers. Depending on the pH value, the flowers appear pink to blue; in alkaline soil, the flowers appear bright pink to deep pink; the more acidic the soil becomes, the more the blue colour mixes into the flower colour until it appears blue. However, the outstanding feature of the hydrangea 'Zorro' is not the flowers. Rather, the flower stalks are of interest, as they set a special accent due to their dark violet, almost black colour. The dark stems appear very elegant against the dark green leaves and the coloured flowers; even in the winter, when the flowers present themselves as winter decoration, the dark stems are particularly beautiful. With a growth height of 1.2 m this hydrangea has a very compact habit.
The perfect location

As already indicated, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Zorro' prefers an alkaline to acidic soil; depending on the location, the flower colour will change; a pH value of 4.5 is necessary for a blue flower colour. Since the flowers are burnt quickly in full sun, a partially shaded site is recommended. Especially during the flowering period, the garden hydrangea 'Zorro' gets dry, so a location with a sufficient supply of water should be chosen.
Although, of course, the pink flowers are very pretty, the blue flowers in the garden are, of course, something very special since the colour blue is rare in the plant world. Here is justified question: what do I do if I have an alkaline soil but want blue flowers? Well, creating a bog bed seems to be exaggerated, but you can also start small by generously digging out the planting hole and a properly distribute layers of bog bed soil in it. This allows you to have a mini bog bed. However, this is not a solution that works for all eternities. Over time the bog bed soil will mix with the normal garden soil and the pH will become neutral again. Commercially, mixtures are available, so-called “hydrangea blue”, which can be applied to the plant in the spring. The mixture is distributed into the soil with the rain water. Outdoors, however, these blue ferilisers are bad because they quickly seep into the ground. So if you want a long lasting blue blossom in the long term, you should opt for pot cultivation. There you can experiment with blossom chemistry until you get the perfect blue tone. It is important to only water with soft water; rainwater is often softer than tap water.
Robust, like the name indicates

Like Zorro, the famous fighter for justice, this hydrangea is also tough like the guy its named after; it is hardy robust against fungus diseases and pests. Nevertheless, Zorro cannot completely deny its Mediterranean type and prefers a protected location along a wall; particularly cold spring air is unfavorable. In addition, this hydrangea can be covered in the winter with a wire mesh, which is then filled with leaves. Thus even in extremely cold temperatures below -15°C the future flowers, which have already been created in the winter buds, are protected.
In the spring, cut out only that what is dry; the flower buds have already been created in the previous year and would be damaged when cut. In older plants shoots that are too dense can be pruned in order to bring more light and air into the inner part of the plant.
