Product information "Small-growing Hydrangea 'Cotton Candy'®"

The small-growing hydrangea 'Cotton Candy' is characterised by its pretty pink or blue flowers and compact habit. The large, marginal flowers have a bright centre and form a ring around the small, inner flowers.
A long flowering period

If you want a hydrangea with a special blossom, the small-growing hydrangea 'Cotton Candy' is perfect for you. The marginal flowers appear very large and they are pink or bluish in colour. In addition, they have a light yellow centre; the marginal flowers appear almost double, the bright centre representing the second ring of flower petals. Surrounded by these large margins are small, fertile flowers. These attract many insects during the extremely long flowering period from June to the first frosts at the end of October. The faded inflorescences are very decorative and stay on the plant until well into the new year.
Now you may ask: are the flowers pink or blue? Well, this is not so easy to answer. As with other hydrangeas, the colouration is caused by the pH of the soil. The more acidic the soil, the bluer the flower colour. The leaves of the hydrangea 'Cotton Candy' are summer green and turn reddish in autumn. With a compact growth and a height of 1.2 m and a width of the same size, this is definitely a small hydrangea.
The location determines the appearance

The soil for Hydrangea serrata 'Cotton Candy' should typically be neutral to acidic and as mentioned, the flowers in an acidic soil, starting from pH 4.5 are bluer than in alkaline soil. Plantings must adapt to the existing pH value. So if you want blue flowers in the garden, the hydrangea must be planted in a bog bed. If you do not have a bog bed and do not want to make one, you can add a lot of bog bed soil to the planting hole. However, this will not work forever, as at some time the soils mix and the pH rises again. At least the colour will clearly be blue for a few years.
Grow in pots for the blue colour

Luckily, the small-growing hydrangea 'Cotton Candy' ® is sufficiently compact and can be grown in pot; and using “hydrangea blue” is easier in a pot, especially when using acidic soil for bog beds. However the plant should only be watered with soft water, that is, lime-poor water and for this purpose rainwater is often softer than tap water. Otherwise the hydrangea 'Cotton Candy' is undemanding; it can be planted in the sun or partial shade, it is very hardy and has little susceptibility to diseases.
Care and pruning

Hydrangea serrata 'Cotton Candy' blooms on one- and two-year-old wood. This means that it is important that new shoots can be formed, but not all old shoots should be cut. This results in the following pruning tip: in the spring, the old flowers can be removed, in addition, old (more than 3-year-old) shoots should be completely removed, so that the plant is thinned and new growth is stimulated.
The plant can be wonderfully integrated into beds with other ornamental plants or useful shrubs. After all, the hydrangea is one of the main elements in a cottage garden. In groups or as a solitary plant it is particularly beautiful and the placement of the pot on a terrace or balcony is also recommended.
