Product information "Smooth Hydrangea 'Annabelle'"

As the name suggests, the hardy smooth hydrangea flourishes in white, large balls, which are presented from June to August. The flowering splendor of the hydrangea is many-coloured: at the beginning, before the flowers are mature, they have a greenish tone, and after the white flowers bloom, they change to a greenish colour. The flowers are excellent as cut flowers, but it is also worthwhile to keep the flowers on the shrub, as they stay there for a long time and are very decorative, even in the winter. In my childhood I observed the hydrangeas from the spring to the winter. In the garden of my parents we rejoiced in the splendor of the flowers, and later in the autumn the flower heads were used in arrangements and bouquets, which partly stayed on the kitchen table for the entire winter.
This upright shrub grows up to 1.5 m high and has an upright habit, however the shoots often bend under the abundance of the flowers and the shrub has an overhanging appearance, however, the plant can also be tied up. In autumn, a beautiful, yellow autumn colour appears.
Planted in a sunny to partially shaded location, care must be taken to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of water, especially during flowering. In addition, a humus soil is desired, preferably acidic, but a slightly alkaline soil is also tolerated (pH value of 5.5-7.5).
Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle' should be cut to 15 cm in the spring in order to augment the formation of the new shoots and the formation of large terminal flowers. If pruning is repeated on a part of the plant at the beginning of June, the flowering time can be extended until September, whereby the shoot should only be shortened by a third. 'Annabelle' is suitable for containers as well as group plantings. For the above-described staggered bloom, groups of five plants and more are suitable; the overall effect is best with at least three plants.
