Product information "Hydrangea 'Bavaria'®"

The blooms of the hydrangea 'Bavaria' resemble the state coat of arms of Bavaria, Germany; on the outside, the individual flowers are coloured white and the centre is blue or blue violet. The early flowering period from May to August is also unique.
A proud Bavarian

The hydrangea 'Bavaria' bears the colours of the Bavarian state coat of arms, proudly presenting the blossoms in blue and white. The large, single flowers have a blue centre and a white edge. Depending on the climate, location and weather, this colour is lighter; sometimes the centre is only slightly blue, or the centre is coloured violet, which does not correspond to the Bavarian coat of arms, but still looks very nice. Early in May these pretty flowers appear and bloom until August. Afterwards, the inflorescences dry out, but they still look very pretty and stay on the plant until the winter. Also as a cut plant, the hydrangea flowers can be used well; they keep for a long time in vases and are also very decorative when dried. The compact ornamental shrub grows up to 1.25 m high and has approximately the same width.
Protect against midday sun

Like most hydrangeas, the hydrangea 'Bavaria' also wants a semi-shaded location and especially in warm areas, the flowers can easily burn in the sun. Ideal is a location where the plant is protected from the midday sun. During the flowering period, the soil should be supplied with sufficient water. The ideal soil should be rich in nutrients, humus and neutral to acidic, even chalky soils are tolerated when the soil is adequately supplied with nutrients.
Easy care

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bavaria' creates the new flower buds directly under the faded flowers. On new shoots only isolated flower buds are formed. In spite of its good winter hardiness, a winter protection is recommended in cold climates in order to protect the delicate flower buds. For this purpose, a wire mesh can be placed around the plant, then fill the inside loosely with leaves. An additional care measure results from the fact that the flower buds are formed on the old shoots; only slight pruning is necessary. In the spring, the old inflorescences can be removed. Single, dense and old shoots can be thinned out. In this way, the plant is rejuvenated and the plants' interior is filled with sufficient light and air which guarantees beautiful growth.
As a beautiful flowering plant, the hydrangea 'Bavaria' is predestined for planting in a prominent place in a bed, in a group or individually. Due to the early flowering period, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Bavaria' can be used to extend the bloom of the hydrangea and it can also be used well together with other hydrangeas, for example, in a cottage garden. Thanks to the low growth height and the compact habit, this hydrangea is also ideal for growing in a pot on a balcony or terrace. This hydrangea could also flourish in the house; the growth height is nevertheless quite high. A cool overwintering is necessary when growing indoors.
