Product information "Hydrangea 'Bela'"

The hydrangea 'Bela' is one of the best classic hydrangeas. The flower balls appear already in June and blossom blue or pink depending on the pH value, until October. Afterwards, the faded inflorescences make a beautiful winter decoration.
Compact, large flowers

One of the best, classical hydrangeas is the hydrangea 'Bela'. The compact and large flower balls appear from June to October. Depending on the pH, the flower appear pink or blue; the more acidic the soil, the bluer the flower. A beautiful, dark blue shade can be obtained; with only slightly acid soil the flowers are pink with a blue colouring. In neutral soil the flowers have a strong pink colour. The faded flowers often have an old pink tone and with a greenish tint.
After blooming, the flowers stay on the plant until winter and provide a wonderful winter decoration. The flowers’ durability make 'Bela' excellent for vases or for using in dry bouquets. The 'Bela' hydrangea has a compact, dense habit with dark green leaves and reaches heights of up to 1.5 m with a width of 1 m.
The ideal location

The hydrangea 'Bela' prefers neutral to acid soil and with pH values of 4-4.5 the flowers turn blue. At a neutral pH, the flowers are pink; the more acidic the soil becomes, the more blue the flower colour. In addition to the pH value, sun exposure is also crucial; in a sunny location the flowers burn easily. A site is usually chosen which protects the plant and the delicate flowers from the strong midday sun. Sunshine in the mornings and in the evenings is best. Especially during the flowering period a good supply of water is necessary.
The art of the blue colouring

And what can be done if the soil is not acidic and you want a blue flower? Perhaps you already have a bog bed, then the hydrangea can easily be added to the other bog plants. Hydrangeas just want a similar location like rhododendrons; not too sunny, a good water supply and nutrient-rich. But making a bog bed just because of a hydrangea seems a bit exaggerated. But you can create a mini bog bed. The planting hole is generously dug and filled with soil that is ideal for bog bed plants. This is how your hydrangea can have an acid soil with little effort. But due to the hard-working soil inhabitants, the acidic soil will become mixed slowly with the normal garden soil and thus the pH value again rises into the neutral area and the flowers appear pink. This trend can be counteracted with so-called “hydrangea blue”.
If the flower buds have already formed, but have not yet taken any colour, this remedy can be used. Past doses are of no avail, and they evaporate in the soil, and once the flowers are dyed, the colour cannot be changed. Unfortunately, for established hydrangea plants it is difficult to obtain the desired effect. Often times the flowers have a pink to violet-blue colour, which is also very pretty! If, however, a blue blossom is desired, growing the plant in a container is recommended. The hydrangea can then be planted in soil that is suited for bog bed plants, and if necessary, “hydrangea blue” may be used. However, it is important not to water the plant with calcareous water, which could cause the pH to rise again. As a rule, rainwater is less calcareous than tap water.
Easy pruning

Now it is already complicated enough to obtain the desired blue shade in hydrangeas; Luckily, pruning is all the easier. The old flowers can be removed before the leaf appear; the flower buds for the new flowering period have already formed. Dense plants can be thinned out and then the pruning is done. Even though this hydrangea is actually sufficiently hardy, we recommend using a winter protection for cold areas in order to protect the flower buds. To do this, place wire mesh around the plant, then the space with leaves or straw.
The hydrangea 'Bela' does particularly well in beds, borders and pots; it can be planted in groups or individually; it shows its beauty in almost all garden situations. The combination with other hydrangeas is particularly recommended.
