Magnolia 'Cleopatra'

The variety 'Cleopatra' is a hybrid from breeder Vance Hooper. The year of the successful crossing was 1998. The mother is Magnolia x soulangiana 'Sweet Simplicity'; the father (pollen) is Magnolia 'Black Tulip'.
The story of the red magnolia is a story from New Zealand. New Zealand may well be called the centre of modern magnolia breeding.
Magnolia varieties known worldwide such as 'Felix Jury', 'Black Tulip', 'Genius', 'Cleopatra', 'Star Wars', 'Aurora', 'Purple Sensation', 'Ian's Red' (just to name a few) are inseparable from successful New Zealand breeders like Felix and Mark Jury, Vance Hooper, Oswald Blumhardt or Ian Baldick.

Magnolia 'Cleopatra' is a top breed with very large flowers that bloom reliably at a young age. It was voted the Best Novelty 2013 at the IPM trade fair in Essen, Germany.
It grows as an upright, small tree that can reach a height of up to 400 cm and a width of 200 cm in old age.

The flowers of Magnolia 'Cleopatra'

Its pleasantly scented, cup-shaped flowers open from a dark purple to a rich, purple-red hue, with a bluish cast, the coveted Cyclamen purple of Magnolia campbellii (not frost hardy in our region).

As with all magnolias, while the flower unfolds, the risk of late frost plays a role. However, 'Cleopatra' is one of the less sensitive varieties. Even the open flower easily tolerates late frosts, since 'Cleopatra' genetically has very high winter hardiness.

Depending on the year, 'Cleopatra' flowers twice in a year. The regular flowering period is from April to May and there is the potential that it will flower again in August or September.

The 15 to 20 centimetres large flowers are cup-shaped and consist of sepals, stamens and carpels. The flowers are located at the ends of the short shoots, as well as at the shoot tips. It is thus extraordinarily rich-blooming.

The right location for Magnolia 'Cleopatra'

Magnolia 'Cleopatra' is an impressive specimen plant and should have enough space, as this ornamental plant is perfect for individual plantings.
In a sunny location and with sufficient soil moisture there is an intense second flowering in midsummer, with very well-formed summer flowers.

Magnolia 'Cleopatra' is very hardy, but it is recommended that the young plants be provided with a winter protection in the first few years. It prefers a sunny site with a humus-rich and well-drained soil that should be sufficiently moist.

As far as possible, extremely wind-exposed locations should be avoided due to the size of the flowers.
Magnolias have flat-growing roots and love mulch layers made of suitable organic material.
