Magnolia 'Genie'

The variety 'Genie' is a hybrid from breeder Vance Hooper.

The story of the red magnolia is a story from New Zealand. New Zealand may well be called the centre of modern magnolia breeding.
Magnolia varieties known worldwide such as 'Felix Jury', 'Black Tulip', 'Genius', 'Cleopatra', 'Star Wars', 'Aurora', 'Purple Sensation', 'Ian's Red' (just to name a few) are inseparable from successful New Zealand breeders like Felix and Mark Jury, Vance Hooper, Oswald Blumhardt or Ian Baldick.

Magnolia 'Genie' is a top breed that flowers very reliably at a young age. At the IPM trade fair in Essen, Germany, it was voted Best Novelty in 2011.

It grows as an upright, small tree that can reach a height of up to 400-500 cm and a width of 200-300 cm in old age.

The flowers of Magnolia 'Genie'

Its pleasantly scented bell-shaped flowers open from black-red to a rich, purple-red hue.
As with all magnolias, while the flower unfolds, the risk of late frost plays a role. However, 'Genie' is one of the less sensitive species and even the open blossoms easily tolerate late frosts.

Depending on the year, 'Genie' blooms twice a year. The regular flowering period is from April to May and there is the potential that it will flower again in August or September.
The ten to fifteen centimetres large flowers are cup-shaped and consist of sepals, stamens and carpels. The flowers are located at the ends of the short shoots.

The right location for Magnolia 'Genie'

Magnolia 'Genie' is an impressive specimen plant and should have enough space, as this ornamental plant is perfect for individual plantings. Over the years, its dense branches increase in height and width.

Magnolia 'Genie' is very hardy, but it is recommended that the young plants be provided with a winter protection in the first few years. This plant prefers a sunny to partially shaded location with a humus-rich and well-drained soil.
