Product information "Common Broom 'Lena'"

During the flowering season in May and June, the broom 'Lena' turns into a real eye-catcher! The flowers are intensely coloured in different yellow, orange and red tones. Actually, the flower shape is already special and becomes even more special because of its colouring. The enlarged petal, the flag, is deep red coloured on the outside and bright yellow on the inside. Two small, orange petals surround the dark yellow keel, making a really nice colour combination. And then there is this abundance of flowers! The luminous flowers appear on the entire length of the shoots and the dark green leaves are barely visible. With a shoot length of up to 1 m there are lots of flowers! Incidentally, this is also pleasing to butterflies and bees; this broom is an excellent source of food. Often the leaves fall off in the summer, which is not a cause for concern, but normal. The plant also owes its name to brooms because in the summer the dense, leafless shoots were often used as brooms.

Resistant to urban climates

Cytisus scoparius 'Lena' grows up to 1.5 m tall and is vase-shaped, so it tends to be wider at the top. Sometimes the shoots may overhang slightly. The broom 'Lena' wants a sunny and rather dry location and heat is very well tolerated. This ornamental plant especially likes to grow in neutral to acidic, sandy soils. Since this broom can fix nitrogen from the air in the soil (with the aid of nodule bacteria) and fertilises itself, a very nutrient-poor location can also be selected. Thus, the broom 'Lena' is also suitable for extreme locations in city centres, where it is often used as a solitary tree or in a group. Through regular thinning, the intense flowering is increased. This can be done by removing the oldest shoots every year after flowering. If the plant is too big, it can be cut back to 50 cm, but the plant won’t flower next year as it blooms at last year's wood.
