Blueberries - a new research area at Lubera
In the last 5-10 years, blueberries have become one of the best-selling soft fruit species. We have therefore intensified our selection efforts accordingly and have selected the best tasting varieties for you (Blue Dessert, Blueroma, as well as Sunshine Blue). Thanks to our second production site in Ammerland near Oldenburg (with bog-like soil), we are now more and more intensely breeding and selecting blueberries. With regard to the global diversity of varieties and species it is first crucial to the test the blueberries, which are becoming increasingly popular, in terms of their suitability for gardens. Because even with the blueberries, as with many other types of fruit, they are almost only grown for commercial cultivation.

Soil (Rodger)
I thought Blueberries need 100% ericaceous soil. Do I need to plant this in specially bought ericaceous or can I put it straight in the ground, medium density soil about 6.5? Or should I put in lots of ericacious? Thanks.
Soil (Sonja Dreher)
Hello,
it absolutely needs the acidic soil with a pH of 3,5. Use ericaceous soil, or rhododendron soil in a pH 6,5 it will slowly die.
kind regards
Sonja

Self Fertility of Blueberry! (Darren)
Not a question, but rather a few facts for those potential blueberry growers. Bluecrop is highly self fertile and does not need nor gains any benefits from cross pollination. Most blueberries have a degree of parthenocarpy meaning they set fruit in absence of any pollinators even their own, but the result is small seedless berries. Jersey has a level of 84% parthenocarpy in some U.S tests. Others have much lower levels for example Patriot, whilst cultivars such as Northland has very low levels and always sets seed. Cross pollination really benefits Patriot, possibly Northland, but never Bluecrop. Newer blueberries like Brigitta blueberry are unreliably self fertile as the flower corolla has a major anatomical defect which interferes with the self pollinization process thus it needs a cross pollinator. Most Northern Highbush blueberries have levels of high fruit set 50-75% with their own pollen, but in an open environment the fruit set commercially wise is always 90% plus due to beehives, mixed cultivars, or single blocks of the same cultivar as most are very self compatible with their own pollen etc. The Low bush types vaccinium augustifolium is largely self sterile, hence it is used in breeding programs and crossed for better self fertility with vaccinium corymbosum your standard blueberry bush.
