Product information "Blackberry Direttissima® Montblanc®"

Direttissima® Montblanc® is the first direct bearing blackberry from Lubera. A direct bearing blackberry? Yes, like an autumn raspberry it can be cut down to a height of about 15 cm at the end of February or the beginning of March; it will then immediately start to grow new shoots, then bloom at the end of June and finally, it will bear fruit in the same year from the end of June until mid-August.
Based on the breeding work of Jim Moore and John Clark of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, USA, we have managed to grow the first direct bearing blackberry, which is guaranteed to bear fruit from mid-August and thus has enough time to produce a good harvest into the autumn months.
The name of this blackberry, Direttissima, originates from mountaineering and refers to the most direct route to the summit. And here, relating to blackberries, Direttissima means the most direct route towards rapid fruit yields and the easiest cultivation: cut down each year in the spring, let it grow, then harvest the fruits. That's it.
Well, with its 4,810 m Montblanc® is the highest mountain in the Alps and it not easy to climb...It actually has nothing in common with the slight hills of Arkansas - and so it has taken over 10 years of breeding to achieve this variety from the base material that originated in Arkansas. And yet all of the breeding objectives have not been reached: Direttissima® Montblanc® has thorns and can sometimes grow up to a height of 150-200 cm; it also loves to be stabilised on a stake. Montblanc® stays compact, robust and bushy when it is trimmed to 50 cm in May.
The first direct bearing blackberry Direttissima® Montblanc® is suitable for small gardens or for containers. It is like a small miracle every year watching how it develops new shoots after being pruned; the plant has uniform, large, white flowers and it forms huge, jet-black blackberries from mid-August.

Growth type: Bears fruit on this year’s shoots, very vigorous
Maturity: From mid-August; this is the earliest of all Primocane varieties which bear fruit on this year’s shoots
Fruits: Very large, mildly sweet and tart with a good flavour
Habit: Upright, also can be cut back to a height of approx. 50 cm; this helps the plant develop more side shoots (bushiness), and thereby also more flowers or fruit; it has remarkably healthy, green leaves in the summer; it is less susceptible to mites and mildew
Tip: Cut back Direttissima® blackberries in early March; never as far as ground level, but leave a stub of about 15-20 m; this allows more shoots to grow, which produce more and earlier fruit

Do not cut the old shoots of Direttissima blackberries to the ground When pruning Direttissima blackberries the shoots should never be cut down to ground level; a stump with a length of 15 cm should always remain. This has the effect that here next to the new base shoots also side shoots will form that bear fruit earlier and therefore provide an earlier harvest time.

Is it primocane (Lubera)

Hi John. Montblanc is primocane, if you leave 20 cm of the last year canes you get also berries on the floricane stems and have an harvest which starts earlier. Best regards.
