Product information "White Blackberry 'Polarberry'®"

Polarberry® is indeed a white, e.g. white-fruited blackberry. In addition to the simple surprise effect, this new blackberry colour is certainly also horticulturally interesting: the flavour changes without the anthocyanins and becomes sweeter. This is certainly good news for the sweet tooths among the fruit lovers. Of course, with a blackberry, there will be no more sunburn, which is almost standard for blackberries in midsummer (red parts on the fruits of the otherwise black berries; if there are too many, the fruit will be bitter). And finally, white blackberries are pecked less by birds and less affected by the spotted wing drosophila. But above all, the white blackberry Polarberry® is quite simply an exciting enrichment to the blackberry range.

Short Description of the White Blackberry Polarberry®

Fruits: Small to medium fruits, white-beige fruit colour; closer in size to wild blackberries than the large-bred, modern blackberry varieties.

Maturity/harvest: As with conventional blackberries, the twigs on the side shoots bloom in the second year; the ripeness of the fruit begins at the end of July and lasts until September.

Flavour: Sweet fruit, less acidity than conventional black blackberries, otherwise typical blackberry taste.

Use: Fresh consumption and for decoration; just imagine a cake with blackberries being interrupted in between by their white sisters...and of course there is always the surprise effect with this new white blackberry: who ever tasted a white blackberry?

Plant spacing: 150-200 cm

Location/growth: Healthy, medium-strong, semi-upright. The shoots are heavily thorned. The eaves and shoots, even the new shoots show no reddish colour; not only are the anthocyanins not produced in the fruit, but they are also missing in the other parts of the plant. The winter hardiness is comparable to the old thorny blackberry variety Theodor Reimers, maybe a little better.

Pollination: Self-fertile

Training/pot cultivation: We recommend training the conventional blackberry on a wire framework. At a plant spacing of 200 cm, 3-4 shoots are tied fan-like to one side, which will then bear fruit in the second year. On the other side of the fan, the freshly growing canes are tied up. Note: during the growing season, the new canes should not be cut; cutting only leads to branching and even more growth and jeopardises the winter hardiness of the canes.
