Product information "Lowberry® Blueberry Little Blue Wonder"

Plants per square meter: 3 pieces

The blueberry Little Blue Wonder is one of the most compact blueberries: it is only about 40-60 cm high. From the growth characteristic, it is more broad than high, making this compact blueberry perfect for dense area plantings or also as an underplanting for blueberries. It blooms a bit earlier than most other blueberry varieties - but after the greatest danger of frost in the spring. We have never observed spring frost damage to this variety.

During the long lasting flowering period, Little Blue Wonder forms a beautiful and dense, beige-white blanket of flowers. Hence our additional name for Little Blue Wonder: the heather blueberry.

Little Blue Wonder comes from a breeding programme at the University of Minnesota, in which particularly hardy blueberries were sought because of the prevailing climatic conditions. This was fully achieved with Little Blue Wonder. Without problems, Little Blue Wonder survives winter temperatures well below -30° Celsius, in the literature there is even talk of temperatures down to -40° Celsius. From the cross of Northern highbush blueberries with lowbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum x Vaccinium angustifolium), the heather blueberry Little Blue Wonder loses all of its leaves in the winter, in contrast to Sunshine Blue; but before that, it still offers a spectacular Indian summer play of colours in red to burgundy every year. This autumn colouring and the more than rich bloom also make Little Blue Wonder an ideal ornamental blueberry for balconies and terraces, for containers, individual plantings or as a underplanting for blueberries.

The berries of Little Blue Wonder are rather small, smaller than those of Sunshine Blue, but they have a beautiful sky blue colour. Maybe the breeder also thought that when naming the variety Little Blue Wonder. The berries have a fresh flavour that is reminiscent of wild blueberries. Thanks to the pleasant acidity of the berries, Little Blue Wonder tastes significantly better than most cultivated blueberries when they are processed as juice, as jam or in pies.

Flowers: In May, slightly ahead of the other blueberries; dense and extensive bloom, long lasting
Maturity: Average maturity, about the same time as Bluecrop
Fruits: Small, beautiful, sky blue fruits
Flavour: Fresh, reminiscent of wild blueberries. Interestingly, the fruits of Little Blue Wonder taste better than the fruits of most other blueberries when they are processed in pies, jelly, jam and juice. This is probably due to the higher acidity of this variety; in cake, normal blueberries, unlike Little Blue Wonder, often taste somewhat flat and boring...
Yield: Average yield, simply because the volume is missing from such a compact plant. But relative to the plant volume, Little Blue Wonder is one of the most productive varieties
Growth: Very compact growth, only about 40-60 cm high; more broad than high, approximately 50-70 cm wide, making it ideal for area plantings

Pruning compact growing blueberries Even with compact growing blueberries such as Bluedrop, Sunshine Blue and Little Blue Wonder, pruning for rejuvenation and renewal of growth should not be forgotten. Due to the large and exhausting fruitfulness, these productive plants would otherwise increasingly get woody. So it is necessary to cut out old shoots that have already bore fruit as low as possible to a stub in order to stimulate new growth at least every 2-3 years.

Plant info (Hans)

I would like some infos please on this plant. 1.Is it reliably self fertile? I grow Brigitta blue in mixed blocks and that one is very self infertile, because it has defect in its corolla part of flower(learnt this via correspondence with agricultural scientist), but many plant sellers still wrongly advertise it as being self fertile, so I don't want to make same mistake again. 2. Low chill or high chill? Important question if you live in specific zone and with global warming! 3. What its vigor, ph sensitivity like? 4. What amount of yield, similar to blueberry Top Hat's potential of 1kg + when established? Much appreciated your time.
