Blueberries - a new research area at Lubera
In the last 5-10 years, blueberries have become one of the best-selling soft fruit species. We have therefore intensified our selection efforts accordingly and have selected the best tasting varieties for you (Blue Dessert, Blueroma, as well as Sunshine Blue). Thanks to our second production site in Ammerland near Oldenburg (with bog-like soil), we are now more and more intensely breeding and selecting blueberries. With regard to the global diversity of varieties and species it is first crucial to the test the blueberries, which are becoming increasingly popular, in terms of their suitability for gardens. Because even with the blueberries, as with many other types of fruit, they are almost only grown for commercial cultivation.

questions (Colin)

1. How large is the plant (height/width)? 2. In your printed planting instructions I see a description of how you can plant blueberries in a bale of spaghnum peat moss. But you dont say what size bale you need - e.g is 100 litre enough or is 200 litre better and should it be 1 plant per bale? 3. Also, when planting in bales of peat, should one remove some of the peat first? Its just that peat supplied in bale form is very dense/compact - does it help the roots to spread/grow if the peat is looser? Thanks

Blueberry Blue Dessert® (Sonja)

the plant is approximately 50-60cm hight and 40-30cm wide.
For one plant a 100 litre bale is enough for the first two years. When grown it will need a bigger bale.
Another possibility is to plant in a pot (with Drainage holes) and dig the pot in, or to use thin plastic-foil for Ponds.

To loosen up the peat a little would of course help the plant to make roots easier.
