Blueberries - a new research area at Lubera

Yield? (Blake)

How much yield does it give and is it fully self fertile? The other popular tub blueberry Top Hat is one of the most overrated plants ever. Its yield is abysmal and dies easily if soil is not tip top pH wise. Sunshine Blue is okay as a plant but berries are so so and acidic. Hope this Lubera one is better and more adapted to different soils? Looking forward to an answer. Appreciated!

Yield (Philipp Schneider)

Talking about blueberries, it is necessary to be honest. Otherwise the customers are always disappointed.
Blautropf is self fertile.
The yield is high (amount of fruits), the fruits are quiet small, like european blueberries.
The blueberry Blautropf needs like almost all blueberries an acidic soil. It does not grow on a basic soil!
The taste is sweet-sour, fresh.

I hope you got the information you looked for.
Kind regards
Philipp Schneider, Lubera-Team.

Sunshine Blue (Rob)

I grow several varieties commercially in my little organic farm in Devon, U.K.

Firstly I disagree that the fruit quality of Sunshine Blue are only 'so so'. I tub grow all my blueberries in 35 or 50 litre tubs in ericaceous compost plus a top dressing of organic ericaceous granules with fresh 50mm compost each spring.

My Sunshine Blueberries are some of the best, sweet and complex flavours of the lot with the exception perhaps of Pink Lemonade.

I think the secret is NOT TO PICK BEFORE FULLY RIPE. Sometimes blueberries LOOK ripe but are not. Leave the fruit on the bush for longer, until they easily 'roll off' between your fingers at picking time. This makes all the difference. You will find much better sweetness and a fuller flavour all round.

Hope this helps

Yield? (Sonja Dreher)

Blue Drop is a nice decorative Blueberry with stunning autumn colours but if you expect a big yield, you should better take Bluecrop, Blueroma or Blue Dessert.
For Blueberries, the soil has ALWAYS to be acidic 3,5 pH. Otherwise they will not grow properly. If you cannot provide this soil, you can better plant them in big pots with peat or Rhododendron soil.

kind regards
