Product information "Blackcurrant with red leaves Black'n'Red® Premiere"

You know the ornamental currant with the beautiful flower clusters – and the largely unenjoyable berries; and of course you know the blackcurrants with their aromatic, sweet fruits and the largely inconspicuous flowers. Unfortunately, we have not been able to bring this ornamental bloom and the usefulness together when breeding the new varieties. But we are now creating a breakthrough breeding success with Black'n'Red® Premiere, in which we can add an unexpected, decorative element to all of the properties of a good blackcurrant (mildew resistance, healthy leaves, super sweet fruits): red, almost burgundy leaves. The leaves of Black'n'Red® Premiere turn green in the spring, and when they grow older and are exposed to enough sunlight, they turn dark red.

The benefits of the blackcurrant Black'n'Red® at a glance

  • Attractive red foliage that stays on the plant from the summer to late autumn (it gets darker and more of a wine red colour), very ornamental
  • Very sweet, medium-sized fruits with a fine cassis aroma
  • Resistance to mildew

The red leaf colour of the blackcurrant variety Black'n'Red® Premiere

The red leaf colour of this world's first ornamental cassis variety is clearly dependent on the solar radiation. Even during the autumn months, the leaves inside the shrubs are still green, while the outer leaves are already coloured burgundy. Even though the shrubs start sprouting again in the summer, the fresh shoots are green at the tips against the red background of the older leaves. The fresh leaves begin to change colour again after only a few weeks.

Planting tip for the best leaf colouration

The following recommendation has resulted from this colour changing mechanism when planting Black'n'Red® Premiere: Black'n'Red® Premiere should be planted in full sun if possible, so that the red leaves can develop well and finally have the best effect for the viewer. In addition to planting this shrub in a solitary position, either a combination planting with the other new resistant cassis varieties from Lubera® breeding (e.g. Black Marble or Blackbells) that offer the corresponding striking difference in foliage (green-red, alternately or together, just like in politics) or a combination with flowering shrubs is recommended. In any case, with Black'n'Red® Premiere a beautiful showpiece plant has finally resulted from the “Cinderella” of a blackcurrant, which you should certainly not hide behind your house.

Lubera’s path when breeding blackcurrants

Do you remember the blackcurrants from your childhood? Yuck! They were sour, greenish in taste and almost inedible, and then they were equipped with that special cassis aroma that was so brutal, and sharp, even scratchy, that you did not know for sure whether you were eating medicine or a fruit. Lubera® has thoroughly changed this with the Cassissima® blackcurrants: they have a lot of sugar, a round pleasant, sometimes stronger, sometimes more subtle flavour, with huge, fleshy and juicy fruits, which can certainly compete with the sometimes boring blue giant blueberries.

With the Black'n'Red® series, we have now gone one step further: the sweet fruit is complemented by beautiful, warm red leaves that have an almost metallic shimmer. The attractive foliage adorns the fruit bushes until well into autumn. Yes, you've heard right: the blackcurrant in the Black'n'Red® series is an ornamental plant that also bears wonderful, sweet-tasting fruit. And from the useful but ugly shrub with 15 mossy shoots, which hardly ever had beautiful leaves at the time of harvest, this is now a veritable shrub thanks to the resistant growth characteristics and the mildew resistance. Black'n'Red® Premiere is also a real breakthrough in breeding: it is the world's first blackcurrant with red, with summer-red leaves that turn completely red in the sunlight. Our breeding work continues. We are trying to make the berries and strings in the Black'n'Red® series even better and we are working on an even more intense and earlier colouring of the leaves.
