Product information "Confi®Berry Jodeli® (Jostaberry)"

The new jostaberry or Confi®Berry Jodeli® will only grow about 150 cm high in five years, so compared to the old jostaberries it is very compact. Confi®Berry Jodeli® has medium early ripening (beginning to mid-July) and forms very large berries of up to almost 2 cm in size on compact strings (3-5 berries per string). Of our new Confi®Berries, Jodeli® is the sweetest variety and therefore also the best choice for fresh enjoyment and using in fresh desserts. Like all jostaberries, Jodeli® is also perfectly suited for making juices, smoothies and jams. The high pectin content and fructose make it easier to thicken and preserve.

Advantages of the Confi®Berry Jodeli

  • The sweetest of all jostaberries
  • Compact, well-branched growth
  • For eating fresh and processing

Pruning the Confi®Berry Jodeli®

Despite its more compact growth, the modern jostaberry Confi®Berry Jodeli® has also retained an important characteristic of the older jostaberry varieties: it bears fruit on wood that is three years old or older. Even the slightest stimulus, e.g. slight pruning of the long shoots, is enough to produce a large number of fruiting branches and side shoots, which means that new fruiting wood is constantly being created.

We, therefore, recommend the following pruning measures:
  • In principle, cut less than blackcurrants, gooseberries and also red currants, which only bear well when young. Confi®Berries are sometimes forgiving if they are not cut for 2-3 years.
  • The growth should be as dense as possible, which also means protecting the June-ripening fruits from sunburn.
  • New, long, unbranched shoots should be pinched back slightly (for simplicity, usually around last year's growth) in order to get more side shoots.
  • From the 3rd or 4th year of growth, 1-2 older branches that have already bore fruit should be cut away each year; if it is evident that little or no shoots are emerging from the base, the old main branch should be cut back to about 30-40 cm in order to obtain strong, new shoots at the base.
  • For training on a trellis, the lateral fruiting wood should only be removed after 2-3 years back to a stub in order to obtain new fruiting wood.

Short description of the Confi®Berry Jodeli®

Growth: Beautiful, compact, round habit, the older branches branch off wonderfully with short fruiting wood; after about 5 years a height of approx. 150 cm is reached; quite obviously the higher fertility of the Confi®Berries leads to a reduction in vigour.
Resistance: Resistant to leaf fall diseases, may show some mildew in certain years, simply remove the affected plant parts or leave them; the disease does not continue; Jodeli® has a natural tolerance, no plant protection against fungal diseases is necessary.
Maturity: Early to mid-July, although of course the red-black berries almost cry out to be harvested already in June. One should resist this temptation; wait until the fruits have changed colour from red to black to a large extent and until the fruits have produced enough sugar. When fully ripe, Jodeli® has the potential to taste very good even when fresh and can be enjoyed as a sweet fruit or in yoghurt desserts or the like.
Harvest: Jodeli® ripens relatively evenly. For eating fresh it can be harvested continuously for about two weeks (and frozen if necessary), but for processing the entire shrub can be harvested together. Even barely ripe berries can be processed, if the majority of them are already ripe. In addition, unripe jostaberries tend to have a higher content of pectin than fully ripe ones, i.e. they can be preserved even better.
Berries/strings: Large to almost 2 cm large berries and compact clusters with 3-5 berries.
Flavour: Ripe and sweet with a fruity aroma, very mild compared to other jostaberry. varieties, has a very slight hint of cassis aroma, very pleasant.
Training/pruning: In comparison to gooseberries and currants, cut less; the shrub should become dense, also protect it against sunburn; do not cut anything in the first three years, at most pinch back a long shoot so that it branches with fruiting wood. From the 4th year on, remove one old shoot every year, usually cut back to 30-50 cm only, in order to get new strong, long shoots from there. Jodeli® can be used as a natural, beautiful shrub; it will grow to about 150 cm high and about the same width, allowing it to fit perfectly into a row of currants; besides that, training on a trellis and forming as a small standard is also possible.
