Product information "Cassissima® Standard Nimue®"

Cassissima® Nimue® is the most compact blackcurrant of the Lubera cassis varieties. It grows firmly upright, which is an advantage for blackcurrant standards; otherwise, they would fall apart. This grafted standard is suitable for growing in pots or containers. It shares its resistance characteristics with the other varieties of the N series, with Neva and Noiroma, and they all have a much better taste when compared to the commercial varieties. But what makes the difference? It's simple! There is much more sugar than we are used to in Nimue and the other N varieties; this was not the case for previous cassis varieties. The berries are therefore a real delicacy, and often there is no normal harvest at the end because the berries have already been harvested by garden visitors or hungry berry lovers…but that doesn’t matter – as long as they stay in the family...

I am sometimes asked how the “N” names originated in this Cassissima® series. Honestly, I do not exactly know; it was probably coincidence, perhaps because "N" sounds similar to the delightful "mmm"? But I know exactly how 'Nimue' got its name: When my sister gave birth to her daughter, who was namely my first niece, and just as pretty and confident as well, she named her Nimue. We were all very surprised by the exotic name. I did notice the baby’s prominent dark hair at the hospital and then it was obvious what my new, tasty and sweet cassis variety would be called. And one more thing to clarify: All the rumours that my sister had named her daughter after my cassis variety are unfounded.

Maturity: Very early, approximately simultaneously with Noiroma
Fruits: Large, individual fruits on medium long strings; single fruits can also be harvested (without the strings)
Flavour: Extremely high sugar content, coupled with a strong cassis flavour; however thanks to the sugar, this effect is not green and sour, but very pleasant
Growth/health: Upright, but very compact habit, mildew resistant

Berry standards hardly take up space
They can be placed everywhere, even where there really is no room left: in a vegetable patch, in the perennial bed, in a pot on the terrace and balcony, sometimes even in the rosary. Berry standardsare generallyrobust and healthy: as a standard, they ventilate better and dry faster - there are fewer diseases and more berries. And I almost forgot the ultimate argument: Berry standardsare definitelyeasy on your back when pruning and harvesting.

Tips

Remove suckers at the base Currant standards and also gooseberry standards are grafted onto Ribes aureum rootstocks; and they are grafted on top, at the height of the crown. This means that any ground shoots are not part of the fruit-bearing species and they should be removed as soon as possible. It is better to rip the shoots out of the ground rather than cut them. Dormant buds are also removed when the shoots are ripped out; if they are cut, they remain in the soil and on the roots, and soon new shoots will come out of the ground again.
