Product information "Jostaberry Jofruity® (Confi®Berry)"

The Confi®Berry Jofruity® ripens early, at the beginning of July, slightly earlier than Jodeli®. It has a refreshingly fruity flavour without cassis aroma, influenced more by the gooseberry than by the blackcurrant. Here, too, one must wait with the harvest until the reddish fruit colour moves towards black, but even the ripe fruit is redder than with the other Confi®Berries. The growth of Jofruity® is the most compact of all Confi®Berries, and fertility is the highest. After about five years, a Jofruity® shrub grows to a height of 120-140 cm, which is comparable to normal blackcurrants.

Advantages of the Confi®Berry Jofruity®

  • Fruity berry flavour, closer to gooseberries than to blackcurrants
  • The most compact growth of all Confi®Berries
  • Extremely fertile

Pruning the Jostaberry Jofruity®

Due to its compact growth, but also with its extreme fertility, Jofruity® must be pruned slightly differently than Jodeli® and Jogusto®. In the end, we prune similar to the way blackcurrants or gooseberries are pruned by avoiding cutting the fruiting wood and consistently cutting out two or even more shoots every year, three years after planting, usually to the base, in order to promote new growth.

Short description of the Confi®Berry Jofruity®

Growth: Compared to other jostaberry varieties, it is weakly growing, only about 120 to 140 cm after five years; develops characteristic, arching, long shoots, which then bear fruit over its entire length for 2-3 years. The wood should be rejuvenated and renewed a little faster than with classic jostaberry or the other Confi®Berries.
Resistance: This variety does not show any leaf fall and also almost no mildew; no plant protection against fungal diseases is necessary.
Maturity: Early July, a little earlier than Jodeli®; the fruits are not yet ripe when they are completely red, but when they are ripe they retain a reddish hue, so they are not completely black...but in the end you should simply try them – and thus determine the ideal time for harvesting. If the sun is extremely strong in the summer, you may decide to pick immediately and a little before the physiological ripeness in order to avoid sunburn. Even barely ripe fruits can be processed very well.
Berries/clusters: In proportion rather smaller berries, approx. 1.2-1.4 cm in diameter, on small clusters. But the fertility (yield per unit crown volume) is still higher than with Jodeli® or Jogusto®.
Flavour: Neutral fruity taste, refreshing, more influenced by the gooseberry than by the blackcurrant; no cassis aroma.
Training/pruning: Cut back very strongly, comparable to blackcurrants. From the 3rd or 4th year of growth, take vigorous measures on the fruiting shoots, removing two or more old shoots each year back to the base in order to encourage the growth of new long shoots, thus rejuvenating the shrub completely every 3-4 years.
