Product information "Lowberry® Little Black Sugar"

Especially the modern, mildew-resistant black currants usually have fairly vigorous growth, and easily reach a height up to 2 m. With Little Black Sugar we have found a compact variety that combines the resistance to powdery mildew, large and very sweet fruits with a growth height of up to 100 cm. Now the black currant can also be a plant for the terrace...
The black currant Lowberry® Little Black Sugar is not only compact, but also very bushy and well-branched. Every year, 2-3 older shoots should be removed completely in order to stimulate new shoots, which always bring the best fruit quality. 'Little Black Sugar' is also resistant to mildew. The medium to large fruits on rather small clusters are very sweet; the typical cassis flavour is present but clearly superimposed by the sugar. We have seen several people who dislike cassis then be convinced by Little Black Sugar.
Growth: Compact, 80 cm to 1 m; 'Little Black Sugar' is also resistant to mildew, has healthy foliage
Maturity: Early, still in June
Fruits: Medium to large fruits with rather small clusters. The berries can also be individually harvested and eaten
Flavour: Very sweet; the typical cassis flavour is present, but clearly superimposed by the sugar. Ha, really almost like sweet, disguised medicine ;) But luckily it is still lots better!

It is not necessary to prune currant bushes: Freshly planted currant bushes do not need to be pruned! Despite old rules and tips that are still around, the reason for this is that bareroot plants were planted in the past and not the fully developed young plants with large root balls, which is the case nowadays. Naturally, it made sense to ease the currant’s planting shock by reducing the above-ground organs (i.e. the shoots) in order to guarantee good growth. However, this is no longer necessary with today’s strong container plants and this would only unnecessarily delay the start of yield. The first harvest is usually possible in the year of planting year if done in early spring; a good yield can be expected in the second year.
