Product information "Rhubarb Livingstone"

The autumn rhubarb variety ‘Livingstone’ brings whole new practices with regard to the cultivation of rhubarb: this variety can be harvested in both the summer and autumn. In contrast to the known varieties of rhubarb, the autumn rhubarb ‘Livingstone’ does not stop growing around the longest day, but it continues to grow well into the autumn months. In autumn, when there are cooler temperatures, a larger harvest is even expected than in the summer.

Now one may ask whether it makes sense to make the first fruit of spring into an all-season vegetable ... and isn’t it possible to easily freeze rhubarb and thus keep it available all year round? But can these frozen stalks really compete with freshly cut rhubarb?

These questions must be answered for each gardener. We believe that the fresh availability throughout the growing season is already a pretty attractive achievement. The garden plant rhubarb also wins in stature when it does not simply become almost leafless in the summer, but stands in its large-leaved glory throughout the summer and autumn. It is a kind of hosta plant that can incidentally be harvested and enjoyed. But one last argument seems to me more important: rhubarb plants are often harvested too strongly in the garden because gardeners want to enjoy and freeze as much as possible before the end of the harvest period on the longest day. And the freezing itself is only fun if you have a larger amount that can simultaneously be processed at any given time. The autumn rhubarb ‘Livingstone’ takes this inherent stress away from the rhubarb cultivation; you can now cut stalks whenever you need them. Or you can plant one or two rhubarb plants for the first harvest period in the spring, and then autumn rhubarb ‘Livingstone’ for the subsequent sporadic harvest.

Stalks: Long, medium-thick stalks, striking, pink colour on the outside, green on the inside with a pink tinge
Harvest: In the spring from mid/late April, then in the summer and autumn, well into October. We offer strong plants, but it is well worth it, not to harvest the rhubarb in the planting year and then only to begin the harvest in the second year after planting: this allows the plant to establish itself well and strong.
Flavour: Fine rhubarb flavour, milder than the plain green, early varieties
Uses: Cooking, compote and cakes; caution: use the stalks only; do not use the leaves!
Cultivation: After an initial phase of 1-2 years, ‘Livingstone’ can be harvested throughout the year. As a rule of thumb, you should never harvest more than one third of the mature stalks, and at most, at intervals of about 3 weeks (and even then only when you see that enough new stalks have developed). Otherwise you take the strength away from the plant for regeneration, becoming more sustainable and delivering good harvests.
