Product information "Autumn raspberry Schlaraffia® Plentiful"

Of course, it is possible to only snack on the autumn raspberry Schlaraffia® Plentiful, but actually it’s all about the harvest with this variety. Or rather: the big harvest. This early maturing autumn raspberry, which starts to ripen in July (clearly before Autumn Bliss) produces an enormous amount of fruits at a height of 70-120 cm. In late July and early August, you almost no longer see any of the leaves due to lots of flowers, the green fruit and clusters of ripe fruit. The fertility of Schlaraffia® Plentiful beats everything we've seen so far in raspberry breeding. The fruits begin to grow large and conical, but then become medium in size. This size, which they then maintain, is due to the huge amount of fruits that the main crop produces. Despite the early beginning of harvest in July, the autumn raspberry Schlaraffia® Plentiful continues to bear fruit for a long time: after the main harvest at the end of July/beginning of August, there are always new side shoots that bear fruit, which extend the yield and offer the daily berries for a fine fruit dessert, a smoothie or bircher muesli for a very long time. This Schlaraffia® raspberry lives up to its name: the plant, in the ideal height of 120-150 cm, does all of the work on its own. The gardener only has to harvest the fruits! ;-) And if the Schlaraffia® raspberry goes directly into the mouth (who can withstand picking in the long term), then the excellent aroma of this variety, which appeals to lovers of sweet fruits, can also be recognised.

The benefits of the autumn raspberry Schlaraffia® Plentiful

• Gigantic harvest
• Thornless canes
• A perfect harvest at a height of 110-150 cm
• Little training effort
• Long, staggered ripening period

Twotimer® capability

Despite its compactness and infinite fertility, Schlaraffia® Plentiful has the ability to bear fruit on the two-year-old canes as well. When cutting the plant back in the spring, leave the first 50-100 cm of a later-grown cane that has flowered and produced fruit only at the top, and then you can look forward to a first harvest in June. Only two such canes per plant should be left.

Training and fertilisation

Due to the strong branching and the gigantic and of course heavy crop in the upper area, Schlaraffia® Plentiful is not completely self-supporting. Nevertheless, informal plantings are also possible, for example in a perennial bed, where the canes are stabilised at a height of about 80 cm simply by using a short stake. When planted in rows, Schlaraffia® Plentiful is perfectly attuned to a horizontal lattice that is fixed at a height of approx. 80-100 cm using four stakes and through which the fruiting canes can grow.

The yield potential of Schlaraffia® Plentiful is ultimately based on the shoot growth: the more and bushier the variety grows, the more fruits it produces thanks to its extraordinary fertility. And vice versa: of course, the excess fertility reduces and slows down growth, and ultimately it is also the reason for the beautiful, medium height of 120-150 cm. Nevertheless, it is important that this variety should be fertilised a bit more intensively than other autumn raspberries. For example, in addition to mineral fertilisation in the spring, a light layer of well-fermented green compost may be applied, which can then easily be incorporated, but in no way should be allowed to form a cover over the root area. In addition to the basic fertilisation in the spring (80 g of Frutilizer Compound Fertiliser Plus per m²), re-fertilising is carried out a second time in late May to early June – with about half of the spring dose (50 g of Frutilizer Compound Fertiliser Plus); this then helps the later yields in August and September. Alternatively, slow release fertiliser can be used, but only for the first fertiliser application; the subsequent fertilisation should take place with faster acting fertiliser.

Schlaraffia® Plentiful in containers

In addition to the super-compact Lowberry® raspberries, Schlaraffia® Plentiful is also well-suited for growing in containers: the compact growth, the gigantic yield that distributes itself over a longer time as well as the thornless shoots almost predestines this raspberry variety for growing in containers on terraces and balconies. The slightly overhanging and fruit-studded growth is best stabilised with a stabilising ring, as known from higher growing bedding plants or perennials.

Short description of the autumn raspberry Schlaraffia® Plentiful

Cultivation: An autumn raspberry that bears fruit on 2-year old canes. It has the ability for a Twotimer® yield on the 2-year-old canes that were left standing; ideal for growing in containers with a volume of at least 15 L
Maturing period: The first fruits are ripe starting in the 3rd or 4th week of July, very early, the main harvest is from late July to mid-August, but until mid/late September the fruits will still ripen from later-growing shoot branches
Fruits: At first large and conical, then medium-sized fruit that stays this way; the fruit size pays tribute to the gigantic yield. But there have never been so many kilograms of raspberries that could be harvested before...
Growth: Thornless shoots, bushy growth, well-branched, resulting in a relatively broad habit and a veritable wave of ripening fruit in the range of 50-120 cm in late July
Breeding: Bred in the joint English breeding programme of East Malling Research and Lubera®, breeder: Felicidad Fernandez
