Product information "Strawberry Frutium® Belleure® 6-Pack"

Maturity: Early to very early
Fruits: Beautifully shaped, conical fruits, medium red to dark red, completely red when fully ripe
Taste: Early strawberry varieties have a fundamental problem: they often lack sugar. This new variety now has so much sugar when fully ripe that some sourness can be present. And that then results in a fruity overall impression
Yield: High, concentrated, strong harvest, which is already finished when medium-maturing varieties or late-maturing varieties start to be harvested. Excellent yield in the second year after planting
Growth: Rather strong growth with good formation of runners; good leaf health after the harvest until autumn

June-bearing Lubera® Frutium® Strawberries
Modern strawberry breeding has spent hours with the size, strength, resistance, transportability, colours and durability of the strawberry. The taste has not been forgotten, but it did come short alongside all the other economically more important criteria. In recent years, when I selected the best strawberries (in my opinion) in the fields of Peter Stoppel, only 5-10% of the same plants were selected by Peter Stoppel for commercial cultivation. From this work, from the selection of the best tasting varieties from one of the most advanced strawberry breeding programmes for commercial cultivation, the Lubera® Frutium® line of strawberries for the garden will now gradually take shape: strawberries that are simply better, with a fruiter taste than what is sold at the supermarket. They are nevertheless similar to market strawberries with regard to their size, bite and texture. The taste buds on our tongue allow us to experience the sensations of sweet and sour, bitter, salty, umami (spicy) and possibly even fatty. For fruit, the combination of “sweet” and “sour” is critical, possibly supplemented in the background by “bitter”. The ideal combination of sweetness and sourness is what we call “fruity”. Fruitiness is inconceivable without sourness. And the more sugar we have in a strawberry, the more sourness can be incorporated into the fruit without it having a negative effect. We have thus described the breeding goal of our new Frutium® line: modern varieties with high yields and disease resistance that combine the high sugar content with high acidity and thus, they have a fruity effect. So that each enjoyed strawberry calls for more ...

Tips

Forcing strawberries Do what professional strawberry growers do when they want to offer strawberries at the beginning of May or even earlier. Of course, this especially makes sense for early maturing varieties; those who force late maturing varieties will never end up with a very early harvest date. And how does forcing work? Simply clean your strawberry plants at the beginning of March, remove the old, rotted leaves, apply some fertiliser or compost and then cover the bed with fleece or a small tunnel (built with spring steel bars). And then you can literally watch as the strawberry plants start to produce leaves, blossoms and then bear fruit. With forcing, it is possible for the plants to be ready 2-4 weeks earlier.

With this designation, we emphasise only those plants that according to our experience work (almost) everywhere; they are easy to grow and bear fruits or produce flowers quickly and without problems. These are plants that can be enjoyed immediately and without effort once planted.
  • Lubera Breeding This plant was bred by Lubera in Switzerland and placed on the market after extensive testing at our facilities in Buchs (CH) and Bad Zwischenahn (D). In 20 years of work, Lubera's founder and breeder Markus Kobelt has bred more than 80 of his own new varieties for the home garden; they all have the goal of providing you, our customers, with more experience and flavour, easier growing and more resistant, more robust varieties.
