Product information "Cape gooseberry 'Biscuit'"

The biscuit berry Bonsai is not Physalis peruviana, but rather Physalis pruinosa. The berries are much smaller than the traditional cape gooseberries, but the plant of this selection grows to only about 50 cm and then brings an increasing number of fruits to maturity. They fall ripe to the ground and can be collected daily; due to the calyx husks they are not dirty. I cannot understand why this Physalis is sometimes called pineapple berry: for me, it has a pronounced biscuit aroma with a vanilla finish. And those who want to experience this special flavour of the first berry that was supposed to be a biscuit, well, they must first plant it ...

Harvest: From mid-June; the ripe fruits of the biscuit berry can easily fall to the ground, where they can be harvested daily
Fruits: Small, yellow fruits, significantly smaller than Peters Beste, but very numerous on the small bushes that are only 30-50 cm high
Taste: Fruity, intense biscuit aroma with a vanilla finish (the pineapple is a bit further away in my sense of taste and I would never call this berry “pineapple berry”...)
Growth: Very compact and bushy upright, at approximately 30 to 50 cm high, simply turn the side shoots and the centre to a horizontal position; the bush will not grow higher and it begins to bear fruit intensely. A bonsai amongst the cape gooseberries

About Cape gooseberries
We know cape gooseberries (Physalis peruviana and Physalis pruinosa) from the beautifully decorated plates in restaurants. Maybe we've already seen them in a friend’s garden. But this simple and rewarding berry plant is generally still too rarely grown. The cape gooseberry is indeed not hardy in our climate; each year it must be newly planted (or overwintered), but in the same summer after planting, in early May, it has the almost miraculous ability to grow, to blossom, and bear abundant fruit. In the first year, if it has grown well, you can expect 100 and more fruits; after overwintering, up to 300 fruits are possible in the 2nd year. The beautiful, yellow-orange colour and the aroma that is reminiscent of coconut and vanilla offer an unrivalled addition to berry gardens as well as to containers on balconies and terraces. And another thing: the cape gooseberries are resistant to the spotted-wing drosophila, thanks to their typical calyx husks that act as protective tents.

Tips

Growing Physalis in pots We recommend growing the cape gooseberries Big Buddha and Peters Beste in containers with 15-30 L; the biscuit berry should have a container with 5-10 L.
