Product information "Cassissima® Blackbells®"

The blackcurrant variety Blackbells® is a major breakthrough in cassis breeding. With this variety, it has been possible to achieve progress in three key objectives: Blackbells has sweeter berries, it is large-fruited and it has longer strings than most other blackcurrant varieties.

Variety description for Blackbells®
Maturity: Average maturity time, early to mid-July
Fruits: Very large fruits that are similar to the fruits of Noiroma® and Big Ben; but unlike these varieties, they hang on long clusters; they can be picked well and there are 10 to 15 berries per cluster, like black bells (not only 1-4 berries like Big Ben)
Taste: Mildly sweet; because it is not an extremely early variety, the berries must remain on the bush in order for them to develop their flavour until they are fully ripe
Growth/health: Upright, wide growth, medium strong, resistant to mildew
Overall impression: With the combination of the fruit size, fruit quality and length of the clusters, this new Lubera® Cassissima® variety is really a remarkable breakthrough in breeding black currants.
The benefits of the blackcurrant Blackbells®:
1. More berries per string: in contrast to almost all modern cassis varieties, Blackbells® does not have 2-5 berries, but 10-15 berries, and thus forms imposing clusters. This is exactly the play on the name we have selected: Blackbells®. The clusters not only have one or few bells like Big Ben, but 10-12. ;-)
2. More sugar and flavour: Blackbells® has enough sweetness for fresh enjoyment and can be enjoyed directly from the bush.
3. Larger berries: And despite the long clusters, Blackbells® also has very large berries which outperform most market varieties. Blackbells® is of course also highly tolerant to mildew.
As a breeder you have to admit, however modest, in listing the advantages of Cassissima® Blackbells® that such a concentrated accumulation of advances, of breeding breakthroughs, can be rarely achieved. One more reason to try this new variety. Of course, it also has a very good resistance to mildew.
The blackcurrant Blackbells® is one of Lubera’s own breedings and it was developed in our Swiss parent company. It was selected from a family of seedlings, which go back to the seed-free, faded Neva plants. Due to the high fruit quality and the high sugar content, we suspect that Noiroma is the father.

Pruning blackcurrants In respect of blackcurrants, it is important to remove old woody shoots at ground level after 4-5 years; this creates air and energy, so that new shoots can develop that will provide the best fruit quality in the second to fourth years. By the way: 5 to 6 shoots are enough for a blackcurrant bush, to produce the best fruits!
