Product information "Cassissima® Late Night®"

There are exactly two reasons why this variety has stood out among thousands of seedlings when breeding Lubera blackcurrants and why we have added it to our Cassissmia Series: The exceptionally late ripening time and the long strings.
All previous, mildew-resistant blackcurrants have very short strings – and so Cassissima® Late Night® is a real breakthrough in our breeding programme: It has tolerance to mildew, which is indispensable for garden cultivation AND it has very long strings. And almost all modern varieties are early maturing, usually in June. Cassissima® Late Night® ripens in late July and the blackcurrants can be left hanging well into August. Those that go on holiday in June or July no longer have to do without blackcurrants!

Maturity: Late July to mid-August, can also be harvested continuously for 2-3 weeks
Fruits: Medium-sized, very long strings: 15-20 berries
Flavour: Intense cassis flavour with slight bitterness, which gets milder in the summer towards the end of the ripening period; unusually high content of active ingredients such as vitamin C
Growth/health: Mildew tolerant, grows upright; strong to very strong growth, like Neva but more vigorous; is one of the few species that can be used for espaliers

What are Lubera Cassissima®?
Cassissima are the new blackcurrants from Lubera. Most Cassissima varieties are characterised by an extremely high sugar content and huge, fleshy fruits. Cassissima® Late Night® suggests only something of the sort: The fruits are medium-sized and the sugar content is lower than Cassissima Nimue or Noiroma, for example. But the late ripening time, the loosely hanging, long strings and the intense, bitter flavour have convinced us to include this variety in our assortment. It is more suitable for making jam and syrup rather than for fresh enjoyment.

Tips

Plant currant bushes deep Blackcurrants, but also red and white currants, which are supposed to grow as shrubs should be planted deep. What does “deep” mean? The top edge of the root ball to be planted 5-10 cm below the surface. Why? Because enough buds are ready underground that form new shoots again and again; they rejuvenate the bush and thus keep the high fruit quality, the string length and size of the fruits at a high level. The best fruit quality for blackcurrants occurs on shoots that are 2-4 years old.
