Due to Brexit, we are not able to deliver to the UK. We are working on a solution on how we can continue to bring a wide range of Lubera plants to the UK and directly to our customers' homes in the future. However, such a solution will not be available before 2022 or 2023.

Product information "Early Pointilla Fruithunters® 'Cherrific'"

The early Pointilla Cherrific® turns the Pointilla® (Elaeagnus fruit varieties) into a fruit that spans an arc from early summer to late autumn. The Pointilla variety Cherrific is not like its cousins that are ripe in late autumn, but it already matures together with the earliest shrub berries starting in mid-June! Can you understand my surprise when I first saw this precocious Pointilla in our trial field? Now what? The oleaster variety Cherrific is not only much earlier, but also much larger than its Pointilla-related berry bushes, which only ripen shortly before the start of winter (Pointilla Sweet'n'sour, Fortunella, Amoroso).

The early Pointilla® Cherrific most closely resembles a small sour cherry with a very long stem. Again, there is the clear difference to the late Pointillas: the fruit sit almost directly on the fruit-bearing wood, similar to sea buckthorn berries. The difference can also be explained by the fact that the late Elaeagnus fruit varieties Pointilla® Sweetnsour, Pointilla® Fortunella and Pointilla® Amoroso are botanically attributed to Elaeagnus umbellata; the new early Pointilla derives botanically from Elaeagnus multiflora.

In other respects, Pointilla Cherrific® beats all the Pointilla® expectations by far: it not only matures earlier with much larger, about 1.5-2 cm long fruits, it also has a slightly more intense, almost brilliant orange colour in the sunlight and the taste is – just as addictive – sweet and sour like the late varieties, just a tad bit fruitier and juicier. A real treat!
Incidentally, Cherrific was selected by our friends Jim Gilbert and Laureen Gardner in Oregon, who brought the seeds back from one of their long journeys. By the way, we are testing additional selections of Elaeagnus multiflora in our experimental garden.

Short Description of Early Pointilla® Fruithunters® Cherrific

Maturity/harvest: From mid-June, somewhat subsequent ripening, must be picked over more than once.

Fruits: In comparison to the late Pointillas, it has very large, about 1.5-2 cm long fruits; Pointilla® forms stone fruits (like cherries), with a soft pits, which can be eaten or bitten.

Flavour: The fruits show the typical balance of sweetness and sourness, with a hint of astringency, but also a dose of fruitiness that is almost addicting.

Use: I really enjoy fresh food, and the harvested fruits can also be used for cakes, jellies and jams, that is, if there is anything left to freeze at the end of the summer.

Plant spacing: Plant the Pointilla Fruithunters® Cherrific at a distance of approx. 1.5 m, then the bushes will grow together and form a beautiful hedge, with decorative flowers at the end of April and fruits in June.

Location/growth: Cherrific forms round, uniform shrubs that are about 150-180 cm high. It prefers a soil that is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 7). At a pH well above 7, we recommend lowering the acidity and adding sulphur or peat soil. Cherrific® needs a sunny to semi-sunny location and can otherwise cope with almost any type of soil.

Pollination: In contrast to the late Pointillas, Cherrific® is self-fertile, which means that it can be planted alone.

Training/pot cultivation: Due to the slightly more compact habit, the early Pointilla Cherrific® is almost better suited for pots than the late Pointillas. In both fruit subspecies, a large pot with a volume of at least 30 L (50-100 L is better) is advantageous.

How should the early Pointilla be pruned?
Basically, the early Pointilla forms a uniformly round bush. However, is happens relatively often that one branch goes astray at the beginning and then dominates everything else. In order to prevent this, such dominating shoots should be cut back consistently in the first few years in order to ensure a bushy habit. Later, one to two old shoots can be cut out every year (to 10-15 cm long stumps), so that new fruit branches can develop from the base. Pruning takes place in February, before the start of growth.

  • Available March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November
