Product information "Summer Raspberry Summer Chef®"

For those who have forgotten what a raspberry should taste like, should try the summer raspberry Summer Chef®. For years we have been looking for a summer raspberry for gardens that combines an excellent raspberry aroma (like Tulameen or even better) with robust growth and good cane health, in which the canes can withstand the winter under somewhat harsh conditions (winter coldness and breezes). With Summer Chef® we have found this combination! The aroma of the large, bright red fruits is as intense and concentrated as it is hard to describe: it starts fruity and sour, almost waking you up, also awakening your senses and then comes the aroma that one could describe as being vanilla-like with floral elements. The fruits are very aromatic and fruity! And one more thing: the eating experience continues, not only because you reach for the next fruit again (snacking allowed!), but because the aroma is so sustainable that even now, in the winter, as I write these lines, it's easy to recall...

The name Summer Chef®

Insiders at Lubera® claim that the name Summer Chef® was chosen because you do not need a chef or a creative cook for a raspberry with so much flavour; the fruit speaks for itself, so to speak, it is the boss itself.

The benefits of summer raspberry Summer Chef®

• An extremely intense raspberry aroma, fruity and aromatic
• Healthy, relatively compact, canes overwinter well, few thorns
• Matures in July, right in the gap between the summer and autumn raspberries

Robust growth and high yield

The cultivation of summer raspberries, as interesting as it always is, can sometimes be quite frustrating, since systematically the canes that grew last year must still be healthy and vital after the winter so that in the spring the flowering shoots can sprout and bear fruit. Summer Chef® has its strength in this characteristic in addition to the tasting quality; the moderately thick and relatively compact canes grow in sufficient numbers and do above average well at getting through even harsh winters. They regularly sprout from the bottom to top with relatively long side shoots, which then lead to a very high yield overall.

Why there needs to be new summer raspberries

With autumn raspberries that continue to get better, mature earlier and as Twotimer® can still fruit on last year's canes, we also asked ourselves if there really needs to be any new summer raspberries. But first of all there is the outstanding quality of the fruit, which has not yet been surpassed by any autumn raspberry: obviously, the larger and older wood (the overwintered canes) still has the somewhat greater potential to form sugar and aroma when compared to the autumn raspberries. Something similar to that is also said about old grape vines, in which the young vines can never reach that quality...In addition, the summer raspberries have the advantage that they ripen earlier in the season and are less infested by the spotted wing drosophila whose population in late summer – just in time when the autumn raspberries mature – can become immeasurable.

Short description of the Summer Raspberry Summer Chef®

Cultivation: A summer raspberry that bears fruit on two-year-old canes
Maturing period: July, from the beginning of July
Fruits: Beautifully conical, large, very high yield, resulting from the long fruit shoots that develop along the entire length of last year's canes
Flavour: An intense raspberry aroma with convincing fruitiness
Growth: Sufficient growth of young canes; the canes will not grow past 3 m, but usually remain nice and compact at about 180-220 cm high; good overwintering of the freshly grown canes, few cane losses, even in cold years and in windy, cold conditions
Speciality: The canes are only slightly thorned; the few thorns show up only as bumps that are not prickly
Breeding: This variety originated in the joint breeding programme of East Malling Research and Lubera in Kent, England; breeder: Felcidad Fernandez
